I just tried with desktop CD of Hardy Heron Alpha2, I still got the same
problem.
Anyways, I tried something else with my current (Gutsy) installation, I
booted with noapic option, and it tested with my beeptest program, and the
problem seem to have dissappeared, the problem now is

binaries in source package. 1 rdepend: dspam-webfrontend (suggests),
which is better served by one of the apache2-mod-auth-* packages
(currently set as alternatives with | )

bad thing.
Instead, you should replace (os.getenv(HOME) with (os.getenv(HOME,
/root). I could do this myself, but I leave this to you for the
purpose of mentoring. :)
