I have the same problem, making update right now to update Kernel (to
2.6.24-8) i get no Direct Rendering with Nvidia (using nvidia-glx, but
i change to nvidia-glx-new and same happens)

Yes, I read the howto but I could not get it to work even after removing
the ubuntu drivers.
There was a problem with ift-load on ubuntu since usbfs wasn't mounted.
Once I had mounted usbfs with
