After reporting bugs/errors I opened Add/Remove Programs
which gave me a new error message
AND
the error message here suggested in part:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -f
after which I was able to install one program,
and then run update-manager successfully
to install 36
I couldn't find ~/.scim/config. Am I typing this wrong? I also
searched for .scim from the file system and nothing came up.

I'm lost. After inspection of the udev sources it looks like udev does
not save state between restarts except for the /dev/.udev/rules.d
directory.
So, it might be that the problem was cured by some update since last
reboot 10 hours ago, or that the problem was fixed by unplugging and
plugging

I tried some of the above steps to spin down the drive before ejecting
it, and now when I plug in the drive, it doesn't spin up at all, can't
find it in /dev, or do anything with it. The drive works fine on other
machines, so it's not the hard drive that's screwed.

xsane fails to scan with above mentioned scanner. It seems that initialization

It used to work but I had to wait for five minutes or so after plugging in. In
those minutes nothing happened then
it initialized. Right now nothing happens when I try to scan and at the
maybe life could be made easier for those who have the font available
anyway?
a msttfonts-support package would supply just the defoma hint files for
the windows fonts and a command to copy and install the font files.

I have had a similar issue. I installed kubuntu 7.10 on i386 yesterday,
installed ssh-server, then performed a dist. upgrade. Having said that,
the errors reported when I looked at it with sudo dpkg --configure -a
were about corrupt archives, a removed, purged, cleaned and reinstalled
and things

So long as one video file is open, the others seem to work ok.
AFAIK this is because first video player plays though accelerated (XV)
video driver, but XV can't be used in 2 video players on the same time,
so other video files are played though unaccelerated (X11) video driver
and X11 video
I am experiencing the same problem with Hardy! Without the 'splash'
kernel option everything is all right, suspend/resume works fine. With
the kernel option 'splash' or with the option 'vga=771' the machine (hp
nx8220) suspends, but is unable to resume. I only get a blank screen.

Yes gnome-system-monitor 2.22.1-0ubuntu2 is an improvement, but it only
