I didn't know that Metacity has any own compositor.
I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and when I don't have Compiz enabled, it is using
Metacity without compositing.
I am talking about the minimize effect when the compositor is not turned on.

I used Windows and in Notepad, I often opened non-text files.
Example, I would open executables and be able to find some meaningful
data. Sometimes, I found passwords for trojans. I discovered what email
address the keylogger send to, etc. I even saw some libraries that the
program called.

Gedit is a text editor, but I see no reason to prevent it from opening a
binary file even if its garbled and the user cant get anything
meaningful from it.

I have had no time to play with the acpi=off option and enjoyed two weeks of
