This is still a problem in hardy with all updates. I've not checked any

I have updated the php bug with comments to see if it will be looked at

What Mathias Gug was suggesting may be a better solution however not the
current method that Ubuntu employs in its [shutdown] scripts.

I've experienced precisely the same issues while using the alternate
install of 8.10 on my mom's laptop. She cannot use a SATA on her much
older laptop and I'm no longer able to proceed past this point. I tried
re-burning the CD at the slowest speed with no improvement.

My wife's computer is still pretty well screwed from the perspective
of a non-power user. My wife regularly unsuspends her computer to find
the sound not working. She has found that making sure that Amarok is
playing and suspending and unsuspending generally fixes the sound
though.

I've taken a brief look at this and I'm not sure how the version
could have gotten into this broken state (and I have verified that
it is broken, as reported). I've just used autoppa-switch on trunk
as:
autoppa-switch 1.0.24-0ubuntu0 intrepid
and it generates the right version string:

Another issue is from somewhere grub2 is taking Kubuntu usplashimage
while in the default there is either ubuntu usplashimage or can be seen
I have stopped the splashimage (so I know if something goes wrong)

This is probably a theme bug. I don't see that here with my icon theme,
and we clearly set the icon size to GTK_ICON_SIZE_MENU in the places
sidebar (which should be, under normal circumstances, 16x16).

Same behaviour with current updates - system hangs regularly and needs

I ams shown the various utilities which grub2 has but can't find version
info.
