semi-random silent Firefox crashes. This one seems to be more repeatable
than most:

[Bug 283852] Re: tomcat6 does not include tomcat-dbcp.jar

2008-11-25 Thread Thierry Carrez
Richard: good catch ! Tomcat 5.5 indeed changed the default from
upstream, we should at least do the same for Tomcat 6. This might solve
most of the cases where a tomcat-dbcp.jar copy was needed.

I'll need you guys to validate the fix : I'll soon provide a tomcat6
build for intrepid in my PPA so that you can test if this is sufficient
to fix the issue in your case.

[Bug 302004] [NEW] Please add a samba-dev package

2008-11-25 Thread Robie Basak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I currently don't have access to the include files used to build samba
without extracting the source package. In particular, config.h and
proto.h are autogenerated during the build.

Could the header files please be dumped into /usr/include/samba or
somewhere with a samba-dev package? Then I can have an automated build
based on Build-depends: samba-dev.

Indeed, while writing the post, I didn't realize that these are

These header files don't provide a stable API - there are no public and
private headers in Samba at the moment; function signatures may change
between minor releases. It should be possible to provide these headers,
but it requires splitting the headers up in upstream first.

[Bug 286828] Re: Access to samba 3.0.24-3.0.25 shares using CIFS is broken on 8.10

2008-11-25 Thread Holger Schletz
A warning about the msdfs root = no workaround: This broke some of the
drive mappings on Windows clients. Shares that are mapped via NET USE
(like in a logon script) don't seem to be affected - a name is a name -
but connections manually set up through the GUI seem to store some
additional information and had to be reconnected manually. So much about
network transparency *sigh*

I took the occasion and set up a logon script which does all the
mappings. This repaired some of the broken mappings automatically, but
some mappings still had to be disconnected manually. There seem to be
some other factors involved. Very weird.

I still think disabling an unused and broken feature is a good idea
anyway, but do some thorough testing and be prepared for having to fix
some issues manually.

[Bug 302004] Re: Please add a samba-dev package

2008-11-25 Thread Soren Hansen
My primary concern is this:

Since the API isn't published nor stable you'd have to have a strict
versioned dependency on the samba version against which your package is
built. This is not a problem in itself, but it becomes one if someone
has your package installed, and we publish a security update for Samba.
Given the strict versioned dependency, samba will not be upgraded until
your package has been rebuilt against the new samba version and
subsequently published (since staying with an old samba version is
considered more acceptable to apt than removing your package).

Do you have thoughts on how to counter this?

[Bug 302004] Re: Please add a samba-dev package

2008-11-25 Thread Robie Basak
I agree that letting my package hold back a security update would be a
bad thing, and this would happen with a strict versioned dependency. I
don't see any way to avoid this, so I propose that I don't make the
dependency so strict.

As you say, this has the potential to break should the API change, but
this is unlikely in a stable release (as the security fix would be
backported).

I think that's the best that could be managed save for upstream
declaring the API stable.

Hi Arnaud,

I had a look at this and it seems to be still broken for the newer
version. The debdiff below looks to be the correct fix but I rather have
the fix upstream in debian first before us.

[Bug 302092] [NEW] logging in immediately logs out again

2008-11-25 Thread Sam Morris
Public bug reported:

Logging in via GDM, or login results in the user immediately being
logged out again without any error being displayed.

I booted up in safe mode, and from a root shell ran login(8). If I
logged in there, I saw a segmentation fault error. This does not appear
if I boot up normally.

I finally noticed many of the following kernel messages being logged:

kernel: login[8182]: segfault at 0 ip b7c45abb sp bfc5e9c0 error 4 in
pam_smbpass.so[b7be9000+12a000]

debsums says the checksums of the files in libpam-smbpass are fine.

2008-11-25 Thread Arnaud Quette
hi there,

Morten is fully right, and the fix I've done was a temporary (and bad
bad) fix, waiting for the cdbs/debhelper rewritte.
sadly, I can't be everywhere at the same time, so Morten's
contribution is welcome (thanks Morten).

I'll try to have a look at Morten's patch this evening, though no
promise (I'm working on the PDU merge into the trunk, and some more
FossCamp / UDS preparation...). I'll do my best for a 2.2.2-10 upload
and will ping you back when available...

cheers,

[Bug 268868] Re: [Intrepid Alpha 5 through Live release] NameVirtualHost entry in ports.conf causes NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts warning and breaks virtualhosts

2008-11-25 Thread Glassbox
Yep, figures that you can sync 'em up either way, with the ports or
without. It just seems kinda buggy in that it breaks what was
previously working to allow the -potential- for ssl virtual hosts.
Seems like at least a simple change to documentation in the new
ports.conf file along the lines of the documentation below, saying
something like Match all appropriate VirtualHost * entries to
VirtualHost *:80 to correspond with the NameVirtualHost *:80 would
make explicit the change as opposed to just introducing a new warning
without documenting the solution. :p

From the NEWS.Debian documentation:
apache2 (2.2.9-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * The directive NameVirtualHost * has been changed to NameVirtualHost
*:80. It has also been moved from sites-available/default to ports.conf.
This allows to ship a proper SSL default virtual host config in
sites-available/default-ssl, but it means that if you use several name
based virtual hosts:

- you will have to change VirtualHost * to VirtualHost *:80 in your
  name based virtual hosts

- you need to add more NameVirtualHost directives if you use other ports
than 80 with name based virtual hosts. You may also have to add these
ports to the default virtual host in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default
  (like this: VirtualHost *:80 *:81).

If you prefer to revert to the old setup instead (and don't need the
default-ssl host), just change NameVirtualHost *:80 back to
NameVirtualHost * in ports.conf and VirtualHost *:80 to
VirtualHost * in sites-available/default.

  * For mod_disk_cache, caching is again disabled in disk_cache.conf by
default. It usually makes more sense to enable this on a per-virtual host
basis.

[Bug 283807] Re: freeradius with openssl support doesn't compile

2008-11-25 Thread Chuck Short
You are right it isnt a bug

As said numerious times before we cant ship freeradius with ssl support due to
the license.
That being said I am working on a version of freeradius that is ssl compatible
in my ppa.

The problems with the eap stuff is due to a missing header file.

[Blueprint encrypted-swap-by-default] Encrypted Swap By Default

(Roderick Greening) It would never be expected to encrypt a swap file
which exists in a LVM encrypted drive. Given that to build a LVM system,
you have to use the alternate cd, the user would be in total control of
these choices. Via the regular live CD/DVD, LVM is not a option (that I
recall), so encrypting the swap by default should not be problematic.

[Bug 239752] Re: package dovecot-common 1:1.0.10-1ubuntu5.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-11-25 Thread Bananabob
I have managed to get around this problem. It appears to be due to the
presence/non-presence of some directories and files.

I made sure the following were present:
/var/run/dovecot/login
/var/run/dovecot/login
/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf

I was then able to reinstall dovecot-common

There is a bug 255367 which has this information in it.

There was also another problem when tring to start dovecot.

Warning: mail_extra_groups setting was often used insecurely so it is now
deprecated,
use mail_access_groups or mail_privileged_group instead

This can be fixed by editing /etc/dovecot.conf

change the line:
mail_extra_groups = mail
to:
mail_access_groups = mail

I found this information at

[Bug 302004] Re: Please add a samba-dev package

2008-11-25 Thread Jelmer Vernooij
FWIW, API changes in security releases do happen. The second-to-last
security release changed several function signatures, for example
(http://us5.samba.org/samba/ftp/patches/security/samba-3.0.29-CVE-2008-1105.patch).

We as upstream don't install all of these headers as-is intentionally.
At the very least, please don't install all headers, but just the bare
subset required.

And it worked as advertised. Using likewise-open-4.0.5-0ubuntu3

domain and removing the package. Using version likewise-
open-4.0.5-0ubuntu3.1 from hardy-proposed, I was able to login after
joining a domain and removing the package.

If you need any additional information please let me know.

[Bug 181977] Re: Mutiple file transfers appear to cause libmtp to hang

2008-11-25 Thread Jaakko Sipari
By the way has anyone tried this using the newest version (0.9) of
mtpfs? I'll also try to build it from source and try if the bug gets
fixed that way. Then the solution would be simple enough: update mtpfs
from upstream.

I'll also try what Gordon did (deleting files via bash) and see if I get
the same problem with the current package version (and also 0.9).

In case someone just needs a nice way to use their Zen player and
doesn't care about the mounting aspect, you can use gnomad2 which seems
to work very nicely with my Zen 8GB. Personally I still prefer to
actually mount the player since that makes it possible to use it in a
headless or automated environment.

[Bug 296167] Re: X.org will intermittently stop responding to mouse clicks on Ibex with Xinerama

2008-11-25 Thread xianthax
confirmed and killing my productivity...

this may be helpful in tracking it down.

system specs:

Ubuntu 8.10
Intel Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz
Asus P5E WS Pro Mainboard
8GB ram
2 x Nvidia 8600GTS (177.80 drivers)

Screen setup: 3 screens, each a separate x session all merged with
xinerama, arranged from left to right as: GPU0(screen0), GPU1(Screen0),
GPU1(screen1). All normal orientation and all 1680 x 1050 screens.

Always appears to happen when the mouse is moving across the GPU
boundary. And here is the interesting bit that may help solve this. I
often run 1 application on each screen but not maximized to the screen,
there is a one inch gap or so around the edges of each application
window on each screen. The apps that are on GPU1S0 (middle) and
GPU1S1(right) have custom cursor icons, when the mouse bugs out, if i
move the mouse to GPU0S0 (left) and put it in the area where the windows
are on the other screens, the cursor icon changes and moving it around
more subtly i can get the various cursor from the apps that are running
on the other 2 screens (2 instances of the same app so i can't tell
which screen X thinks the mouse is really on). Clicking anywhere has no
effect, despite attempts to click on the left screen to create action on
one of the others.

Testing: To test this hypothesis i setup 3 instances of xev, one on
each screen roughly the same size and in the same place. I trigger the
bug (waving mouse back and forth quickly across the gpu boundary seems
to be 100% effective at causing this in a short amount of time, thus i
recommend everyone avoid doing this when you don't want to reboot X).

results: movement on GPU0S0 (left) in the area of the xev window on
GPU1S0 (center) triggers events on the xev on GPU1S0 (center),
indicating that X thinks the mouse is one screen to the right of where
it is displayed, presses and releases are also recorded although they
have no effect on running applications (probably because the coordinates
sent to the app are out of bounds). Mouse movement / events anywhere on
GPU1S0 or GPU1S1 cause no xev events on any screen indicating its not
simply an off by 1 screen issue.

this and everything else we've seen indicates to me this is a problem in
handing off cursor control from 1 gpu to the the other gpu.

I'm out of time tonight but i will try disabling hardware acceleration
of the cursor to see if it has any effect on this. I could also
rearrange my screens to further test the GPU boundary theory.

cheers,

x

[Bug 301942] Re: Gedit ctrl-T does not open new tab

2008-11-25 Thread Mackenzie Morgan
You can define your own keyboard shortcuts in most GNOME applications.
System - Preferences - Appearance - Interface, check Editable menu
shortcut keys. Then mouse-over the item in the menu and hit whatever
shortcut you want to remap it to. This should work for most things in
GNOME, the notable exception being Evolution.

[Bug 296167] Re: X.org will intermittently stop responding to mouse clicks on Ibex with Xinerama

2008-11-25 Thread JPHein
I also have this problem.
Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit (updated today)
Nividia 177
Xinerama w/ 4 Screens

Reproduce bug:
1. Open Firefox (with a bunch of Restored tabs including one with flash content)
2. Move Firefox window to different monitor.
3. Right click on the Firefox entry in the Window List and select Move
4. Left click anywhere. (The mouse clicks stop working)

The keyboard still works fine and the mouse cursor still moves around.
One time I opened a terminal with keyboard shortcuts and ran sudo
/etc/init.d/hal restart and it fixed the problem. The next time I tried that
it didn't work.

Nelson: I tried to reproduce the bug using your steps, but It did not manifest
itself for me.

I attached the Xorg.0.log from the buggy session.
I did add Option AutoAddDevicesfalse to my xorg.conf
ServerFlags area, but it didn't seem to help.

[Bug 239731] Re: Select and paste not working properly in Eclipse (probably a Java issue)

2008-11-25 Thread Michael
I was using klipper, which is installed by default in Kubuntu. Now I am
no longer using Eclipse, as it can no longer cope with the size of the
project I need it for, and crashes with out of memory every time I use
it. So this ticket can probably be closed on both counts :) Kendon,
thanks for pointing that out.

[Bug 301958] [NEW] no working driver for sis 671/771 video cards

2008-11-25 Thread bgerlich
Public bug reported:

sis 671/771 driver is not available for Ubuntu but there is a working
driver in the newest Mandriva. The driver in Mandriva is based on
http://www.linuxconsulting.ro/xorg-drivers/ ( I think) .

Not having the driver makes the installation of Ubuntu a PITA on laptops
with sis 671/771 based integrated graphics card. Making the laptop
usable requires playing with xorg.conf and module compilation or
switching to Vesa 1280x768 mode deformed to fit 1280x800 LCD.

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 301957] [NEW] No documentation or manpage

2008-11-25 Thread Micon Frink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: livecd-rootfs

No manpage
No readme
No -h or --help option
No Ubuntu Wiki Help

In short there is no way to learn what this script does or how to use
it. Granted, someone using this should be able to read the code and
discover what it's doing. But then again, what is the use of the tool if
someone knows all the bash commands?

Bottom line: Get it documented!!!

[Bug 268949] Re: Volume control applet does not handle keyboad up and down on Intrepid Ibex

2008-11-25 Thread Chris Coulson
Pathan - thats because gnome-volume-manager has nothing to do with this.
gnome-volume-manager is a legacy application for managing removable
volumes. The mixer applet you speak of is part of gnome-applets, so re-
assigning.

This also has nothing to do with the kernel so I'm closing that task
