[Bug 297406] Re: f-spot crash at startup AMD64 Ubuntu 8.10

2008-11-27 Thread LinuxGuyInVA
I don't think this is a 64-bit or AMD issue. Running 32-bit:

: samhain_pmurphy; uname -a
Linux samhain 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Tue Nov 4 19:33:20 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
: samhain_pmurphy; cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep ^model\ name
model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.86GHz
: samhain_pmurphy;

and I get the same symptoms: f-spot (which was working fine under 8.04) no
longer works
after I upgraded (not re-installed) to 8.10. Debug trace below.

One other point: I have the screen saver set to show f-spot favourites, and
*that* continued
to work up to the point where I tried running f-spot from the command line.
This was after the
8.10 upgrade.

Finally, I ran it from my regular account (which had thousands of imported
photos) and also
from a virgin clean account which had never run f-spot before. Same end
result (f-spot died)
but different traceback. Also shown below (2nd traceback).

Do You have laptop-mode enabled? If so disable and see. I was having the
issue in my HP Pavilion DV 2240br (Broadcom BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev

culprit, but the problem stopped as soon as I disabled it, about one

[Bug 175166] Re: click the icon instruction dangerously confusing

2008-11-27 Thread Steve Alexander
I don't understand why this is a wishlist bug rather than a a bug of
higher importance. The result of a usability problem is that probably
many people are not receiving security updates.

If this were a pure software bug that was preventing people receiving
security updates, it would surely be rated high or critical.
Usability bugs that cause security issues should be treated the same.

[Bug 302251] Re: package libcanberra-gtk0 0.6-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play', which is also in package libcanberra-gnome

2008-11-27 Thread Adam Stovicek
I was able to restore what appeared to be a broken Jaunty installation
after receiving this error. In my case, the system would freeze waiting
for the gdm login to appear. In order to gain access to another terminal
or login prompt, I had to have it boot without the splash, either by
removing it as a kernel option or booting into failsafe from the grub
menu.

This error prevented other packages from finishing. On a whim, I ran
apt-get with the autoremove command which finished setting up about 50
packages. Afterwards, gdm would launch or start without fail.

[Bug 264950] Re: Azureus doesn't allow ports above 49151

2008-11-27 Thread bugmenot
Hello,
I just tried to set my port and it did not work and there was no help (that
helped or explained) why it did not work, it was really strange. There should
be better error messages that explain the strange behaviour.

And on Azureus Wiki ( http://wiki.vuze.com/index.php/Port_is_blacklisted
) there is explicit said: Choose a port from the 49152–65534 range.

Anyway: I think I now have understood the situation. The port range
above 49152 is reserved for dynamic things and if you tell azureus to
use it, it is not static any more.

After one month of using ath5k, here are some more informations. The
version I use is included in backports modules on intrepid: 2.6.27.10.13

* still have errors in dmesg
* link speed always of 1Mb/sec though it should be 54
* at home: WEP 128: link quality varies though always used under the same
conditions
* at university:  WPA2, PAP
 * detect networks correctly, but is not always able to get an IP
 * frequent breakage; sometimes a power off / power on is required because
the hardware can not be reseted (message from dmesg)
 * even freeze (kernel hang?) are experienced since a few days: the
computer is completely blocked, I need to press the power button and reboot.

If any other information is required I will provide them.
Thanks,

[Bug 91615] Re: network-manager-openvpn lacking support for pkcs12

2008-11-27 Thread ryanmbruce
I would argue that this is very much a bug. The netman-ovpn gui in
Intrepid has an 'import' feature that fails on .ovpn files that
reference pkcs12 files because pkcs12 is quietly unsupported. The user
is entirely left in the dark. The import only partially works, and the
user is left to ponder why the connection will not work.

More important than wishlist, imho. It's a big disconnect that needs to
be given more priority than it currently is (last post was over a year
ago).

[Bug 51409] Re: Timezone selection dialog bugs

2008-11-27 Thread Jonathan Marsden
 3. also no way to select RTC in GMT or UTC.

This should be selected automatically: UTC unless there is a Windows
partition detected at install time.

How to check:

To check current settings for the hardware clock (RTC), do:

  egrep UTC|LOCAL /etc/adjtime /etc/default/rcS

/etc/adjtime should contain UTC if the hardware clock is set to UTC, and
LOCAL otherwise.

/etc/default/rcS should contain UTC=yes if hardware clock is set to UTC,
UTC=no otherwise.

How to manually ensure hardware clock is in UTC:

sudo hwclock --utc --systohc
sudo perl -p -i -e s/^UTC=no/UTC=yes/ /etc/default/rcS

I've tried a couple of dvds in hardy, intrepid and jaunty, and both

they started to play on jaunty (although if I try to seek they fail)

So although this is an important issue, it doesn't seem to be a
regression from Hardy, at least not for me with the titles I tried.

[Bug 37750] Re: doesn't ask if BIOS time is in UTC

2008-11-27 Thread Jonathan Marsden
Is the bug that the current Windows detection code is flawed or
absent, so Ubuntu installs with UTC=yes even when there is a Windows
partition visible?

Or, is the bug perhaps that some people install Ubuntu first (so getting
UTC=yes, correctly), and then later install Windows, and subsequently
the two OSes conflict over their interpretation of the hardware clock?

It seems unfortunate to add an extra question/checkbox to the installer
dialog if this can be reliably determined automatically. Perhaps adding
a way to set this in System - Administration - Time and Date (and the
equivalent KDE utility) would be preferable -- keeping the installer
simple, but giving people who add Windows to their Ubuntu machine an
easy graphical way to set their hardware clock to local time?

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make

not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. It would make more sense to raise
problems you are having in the support tracker at

bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 289356] [NEW] ath9k causes system lockup

2008-11-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug by diii (d-iii):

I've had repeated trouble with ath9k causing my system to lock up. It's
a macbook, late 2006 model, running 8.10.

lspci -v shows the following info:

02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5008 Wireless Network
Adapter (rev 01)
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17

Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting ?

Kernel driver in use: ath9k
Kernel modules: ath9k

Kernel:
Linux uviol 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Fri Oct 24 06:40:41 UTC 2008 x86_64
GNU/Linux

Symptoms are the wireless network fails to respond and I am unable to
reconnect. I get repeated popups asking for WPA2 password, and lots of
messages like this in the log:

[72782.981155] ath9k_config: Unable to set channel
[72783.337281] ath_set_channel: unable to reset channel 60 (5300Mhz) flags 0x103

[72784.336993] ath_set_channel: unable to reset channel 153 (5765Mhz) flags 0x50
142 hal status 4294967277

First time this happens, I can clear the problem by unloading and reloading the
ath9k module. It will occur again shortly afterward. Second or third time
around the ath9k module will unload and reload fine, but following this any
process that tries accessing the device will hang (NetworkManager, 'ifconfig',
etc.) and the system becomes more and more unresponsive until I have to power
off.

This bug is a showstopper for me and rebooting twice daily has shot my
workflow to bits, so I'm happy to help debug this in any way I can.

[Bug 302941] [NEW] add libgail18 to gdm dependencies

[Bug 212098] Re: easy file sharing not notifying about logout/login

2008-11-27 Thread Didier Roche
** Description changed:

  On Hardy Beta
When trying to share a folder in nautilus it notifies that the samba package
is not installed.
  It then installs the package.
When you then try to share the folder again it notifies you that you do not
have privilegies to share files and that you have to contact your
administrator...

This is not really true... The problem is that the user IS already added
to the sambashare user group... but the computer has not been logged out
or restarted... thus it does not notice that you really are allowed to
  do this.

A warning that you have to restart or log out should be displayed, and
NOT that you dont have the privilegies.
+
+ --
+
+ The fix in intrepid was to ask for reloading the session and avoid user
confusion.
+ The same patch applied as well on hardy.
+ (please restart your session after having upgrading to nautilus-share so that
the new version is taken into account)

It is indispensable for me, because I do constant video conferencing. I
think one of the importance of ubuntu, is the great hardware support and
that this sort of trouble could deception to multiple users. But I am a
faithful user of ubuntu, and I want to continue using it for much
longer.

as could solve the problem?

[Bug 181977] Re: Mutiple file transfers appear to cause libmtp to hang

I just built the newest versions of libmtp (0.3.3) and mtpfs (0.9). So

to my PPA tomorrow.

[Bug 37750] Re: doesn't ask if BIOS time is in UTC

2008-11-27 Thread Benjamin Drung
It is the second case: You have installed Ubuntu before Windows or while
installing Ubuntu the hard drive with the Windows partition is not
plugged in.

Your suggestion to add an option to System - Administration - Time and
Date sound good and would solve this problem too.

[Bug 302944] [NEW] Ubuntu 8.10 HPLIP unable to scan HP PSC 1210

2008-11-27 Thread Ted Dorsey
Public bug reported:

I've reproduced this problem on 8.04 and 8.10. I have an HP PSC 1210
and I've installed the latest HPLIP, run HP-CHECK and worked through all
the errors and warnings until there are NONE. I can print fine, but I
cannot scan.

When I attempt to initiate a scan through XSANE, I get a message Unable

I noticed the following messages which correspond to each attempt to
invoke scanning through XSANE:

[Bug 301463] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha 1 : X fails in Virtualization

2008-11-27 Thread bodhi.zazen
the i386 version of Ubuntu works with VirtualBox , although the
resolution in low.

My original post was using 9.10 Alpha 1 x86_64 as a guest, using KVM on
the host.

[Bug 287894] Re: Dosbox reading keys wrong after 8.10 upgrade

2008-11-27 Thread Miguel Diago
The solution brings back arrow keys, but if you use a non-US keyboard
some keys stop working. For instance, if you set keyb es to use a
Spanish keyboard, the ñ key doesn't work anymore and - is shown as
'.

[Bug 275423] Re: intrepid madwifi ath5k with AR242x not detecting all wireless networks and link speed is very poor

2008-11-27 Thread Antoine Pairet
Using a newer version of the driver removes the error in dmesg. I followed this
guide:
http://madberry.org/2008/11/how-to-get-atheros-ar242x-to-work-on-810-intrepid-ibex/

link speed reported by NM is now oscillating between 5 and 24 Mb/sec

Should backported modules in intrepid be updated?

No response

It can be closed. GPM now works correctly in Intrepid Ibex.

I'm happy it's fixed and so glad because of the helpful reactions here

[Bug 262853] Re: ov51x-jpeg-source (even latest version 1.5.8) won't build against kernel 2.6.27

2008-11-27 Thread dmoyne
I have just upgraded with kernel 2-6.27-10 64 bits on Intrepid and again the
same (no update !) ov51x-jpeg package does not compile. Here is what I get with

All this for me is a major issue because I have not been able as of
today to make my Hercules Classic webcam work synaptic ; there may be
something available elsewhere with some heme made compilation but this
is typically not good as each time yoy upgrade for a new kernel yoy have
to reinstall all these extra modules !

People have to understand that communication tools such as skype are very
important for users (a a Netscape navigator some yeras ago) and consequently
compatibility with webcam hardware has become a real issue !
Regards.

[Bug 302945] [NEW] soundconverter package dependencies

2008-11-27 Thread Florian Staudacher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: soundconverter

I am using

Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

and I have this version of soundconverter

soundconverter:
  Installiert: 1.3.2-0ubuntu1
  Kandidat: 1.3.2-0ubuntu1
  Versions-Tabelle:
 *** 1.3.2-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/universe Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

When I tried to convert mp3s the app correctly told me to install the
missing gstreamer plugin (which I did), but what wasn't mentioned was
that it also needs the package id3v2 to read the mp3 tags. I was
wondering if you could look for possible further dependencies and
maybe add them in a way they get installed along with soundconverter by
apt.
