I have had the same problem.
Samba was installed a fews days ago. Today i've installed Crossover Games,

This affects me too (8.10, thinkpad x60) and has been a pain for a long
time now (certainly was present in Hardy, can't remember back to Gutsy).
Experimentation shows two distinct problems.
a) on battery power - reduce backlight brightness When selected
this sets the normal brightness to 50% but
I created an Ubuntu 8.10 install CD and tried to boot off that; it also
powered down the system after some amount of time. The system got to
the point where it was trying to load the desktop, then shut off.

Actually I am using the 2.6.27-7-eeepc version of the kernel, so I can
not easily go to jaunty.
My bug report actually does indicate a problem with xorg or dri, as it
crashes frequently (in minutes) while browsing certain websites while
other web sites cause no problem.

gdebi-kde in Kubuntu 8.10 asks for the password if it's launched without
root priviledges, so this should be fixed.

I changed my default session to xfce (instead of last session) and now
the screen saver works! I'll now try the other things you mentioned and

This is a rather serious legal foobar. No progress on this bug report
has unfortunately pushed me to ask for an update.
Has there been any progress? Does anyone care?
The evidence is extremely clear in this case and someone should at least
flag a EULA trip in the package.
