I can confirm this problem on my laptop.
In /var/lib/alsa/asound.state it looks like the mixers should be turned up.
Also the following works:

Hi,
I have tried to identify what config files have been corrupted/missed by
deleting a few files listed below. I deleted them from a virtual
terminal before logging into kde 4.2 RC. It had no apparent affect on
the problem.

There is no change to the problem as I have found it. I still use OOo
2.4.1. My current kernel for 8.10 is given as 2.6.27-9-generic (#1 SMP
Thu Nov 20 21:57:00 UTC 2008) by Sysinfo. I download all updates.

I have the same problem on my laptop running 8.10 which has a standard
intel graphics card, and have had this problem ever since 7.04 (didn't
use ubuntu before then).
Like Francisco, my Xrestop also looks fairly 'normal', and closing
firefox doesn't change more than at most a couple of meg of

As the user has moved back to 8.04 and is happy and will be unable to
test further. I am marking this bug as incomplete and will let it time
out in due course.

Ok, i found a way to repeat the problem quickly. I just started a video
in fullscreen mode (VLC Player) and pressed ALT+TAB many times. It
happend not in the first time, but it took less than 10 seconds.

Oh, and the SSH method to reboot the machine worked fine!
I installed a server on ubuntu and a client on another computer.
From the other computer, i typed sudo shutdown -r 0 and it rebooted.
At least i won't damage my hard disk.
