By adding some logging to dmraid-activate, I catched this:
ERROR: removing part 1 from /dev/sdb: Device or resource busy
In this case the /dev/sdbX devices were exposed.

Does this only happen in launcher, or does it also happen in
applications? For example, if you open firefox, does the mouse go to
the right place when you try to click on a link?

Hi Andreas,
If these patches get merged into the mainline 2.6.31 kernel, Karmic will
automatically have them once we rebase. If however, these do not get
upstream in time for 2.6.31, we'll need to consider backporting to
Karmic. We'll try to keep an eye on this either way. Thanks.

Here is my valgrind log. as mentioned early in comment 13, running with
G_DEBUG=gc-friendly does not crash the gedit, so I had to run it without
it.
the steps I did are:
$ sudo -i
# G_SLICE=always-malloc valgrind -v --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full
--num-callers=40 --log-file=valgrind.log gedit
