Re: [Bug 447586] [NEW] megatec_usb does not work anymore with a Trust PW-4130M UPS

2009-10-10 Thread Arnaud Quette
Hi Björn,

2009/10/9 Björn Torkelsson

 Public bug reported:

 Binary package hint: nut

I have recently upgraded from hardy to intrepid to jaunty. After
upgrading to Intrepid the megatec_usb stopped recognizing my Trust PW-
4130M ups, it still does not work on Jaunty. It worked without any
 problems in hardy.

I tried the megatec_usb driver from hardy and it detects the ups.

 ProblemType: Bug
 Architecture: amd64
 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
 Package: nut 2.4.1-2ubuntu4 [modified: usr/share/nut/driver.list

(leaving the full bug report for the NUT team)

I vaguely remember something with this driver and the default subdriver
used.
Alex may have more info.

can you check the latest development version (subversion trunk).
For more info on getting and compiling the development release:
http://buildbot.ghz.cc/~buildbot/docs/r2003-144/website/download.html

Note that you don't need to install nut ; simply running from the build
directory is sufficient, using:
$ sudo ./drivers/megatec_usb -D -a upsname

you might also give a try to blazer_usb, which will replace megatec*
$ sudo /lib/nut/blazer_usb -D -a upsname
and/or
$ sudo ./drivers/blazer_usb -D -a upsname

cheers,
Arnaud

[Bug 447991] [NEW] eucalyptus-cc cannot be installed without eucalyptus-cloud

2009-10-10 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

From Dan Nurmi:

 Install

 on eucabuild1 -

 ; apt-get install eucalyptus-cloud eucalyptus-walrus

 on duo -

 ; apt-get install eucalyptus-cc eucalyptus-sc

 on sg -

 ; apt-get install eucalyptus-nc

after all installs, the processes are all running, but sc is not running
correctly (commandline has '--disable-walrus', but is missing
 '--disable-cloud'. correct commandline should be:

 eucalyptus-cloud -h / -u eucalyptus --pidfile
 /var/run/eucalyptus/eucalyptus.pid -L console-log --disable-cloud
 --disable-walrus --remote-dns

The problem here will be that the eucalyptus-cc package depends on
eucalyptus-cloud. --disable-cloud isn't passed because we think we're
supposed to be running the cloud controller (because it's installed).

[Bug 447991] Re: eucalyptus-cc cannot be installed without eucalyptus-cloud

2009-10-10 Thread Matt Zimmerman
I tested eucalyptus-cc without eucalyptus-cloud installed, and it works
at least insofar as the simple post-start test, i.e.
http://localhost:8774/axis2/services shows the EucalyptusCC service to
be available. Automatic registration doesn't work, but also isn't
attempted (because it's triggered by eucalyptus-cloud starting up), so
that's OK, and it can be done manually.

I haven't tested further, but I think that's sufficient indication to
remove the package dependency for further testing.

[Bug 432154] Re: dynamic block device attach/detach not functional with karmic KVM

2009-10-10 Thread Daniel Nurmi
My experiments with hot-attaching virtio disks to eucalyptus VMs have
been partially successful. I've been able to attach/detach a virtio
disk to/from a VM once, but the second attach causes a kvm segfault
followed by a libvirtd segfault. Removing eucalyptus from the scenario,
this problem can be reproduced by passing the attach/detach/attach
commands directly using virsh as follows. Note that, although i'm using
an AOE device as the 'source' in the following example, the same problem
exists if you replace the source dev with a local file.

[Bug 209520] Re: unclear error when lanman authentication is refused on the server

2009-10-10 Thread Steve Langasek
You understand that the outstanding bug here is about the clarity of the
error message only? lanman authentication is still insecure, and won't
be re-enabled by default; if your goal is to actually connect to servers
requiring lanman authentication, you will have to reconfigure your
/etc/samba/smb.conf by hand.

Re: [Bug 209520] Re: unclear error when lanman authentication is refused on the server

2009-10-10 Thread Sean Cleary
It now works, and I do not know how or why.
This is a major problem. I can not easily recommend a system that does
not have a easy way to hook up to other house hold computers.
You say solved, and after changing that file, rebooting server and PC a
few times, it did work.
Still, what a mess for anyone, as just a month ago I was trying nearly
everything and did not find your article.
There are many puzzled noob Ubuntu users with this problem out there.
Have mercy, or just give up the idea that Ubuntu is easy to use.
Is there anyway that you can use a program (windows speak= wizard) that
would configure this itself?
Maybe one that can use the info in the windows wizard generated files to
configure every machine on the local net?

[Bug 435570] Re: xorg hangs during karmic install due to issue supporting dual head

2009-10-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

Reporting this on behalf of nagap...@gmail.com. Not using ubuntu-bug
because I dont' have access to teh affected system. I'm pasting his
info, and will attach the apport-cli log he sent.:

Have created the apport-cli report based on Ubuntu 9.04. On this
hardware we are unable to install Ubuntu 9.10. During the installation
process, when the X comes up the complete desktop just hangs (keyboard,
  mouse).

We also tried installing on different hardware and clone the image of it
using Clonezilla (www.clonezilla.org) and tried deploying on this
machine. The booting process was fine, but when it goes to X, the
complete desktop hangs. We have to do hard reset.

Other info: On this hardware, we have to use Safe Graphics mode during
installation with Ubuntu 9.04. We tried the same on Ubuntu 9.10, but it
  doesn't help.

We need this to be fixed for our upcoming VMware Workstation release.
Ubuntu is our default testing platform and we want WS to work fine on
  Ubuntu environment :)

If you need any additional info on this bug, please ping me. My

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

If I have 2 monitors plugged in during boot (in this case, my laptop
screen and a DVI screen), the console boot phase works great, then when
X starts, it seems to crash, then restart, and continuously restart with
no way to stop it (even unplugging the 2nd monitor at this point does
  nothing).

With only the 1 monitor plugged in at boot (the laptop screen), X starts
fine. I can then plug in the 2nd monitor, and use the display applet to
enable it, and all is good.

[Bug 385731] Re: Mythbackend failed to install

2009-10-10 Thread MarcRandolph
It looks like this may be the source of your problems:

 * MythTV home directory, /home/mythtv does not exist.

Can you imagine why this might be?

I would suggest enabling the -fixes branch described here:

It may or may not help you, but it certainly can't hurt.

[Bug 394807] Re: Windows don't drag correctly with dual monitors.

2009-10-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

When I try to drag a window from one monitor to the other the windows
refuses to go past a certain point on the left monitor. I have 2
monitors. The left montor is at 1680x1050 resolution. The right
monitor is at 1280x1024 resolution. If I try to drag a window from the
left side to the right side, the left border of the window seems to
always stop at a certain point and the window refuses to drag from
there. No matter the size of the window, the left border of the window
seems to always stop about 1280 pixels in on the left montior.

The window seems to render fine on the right monitor, and the curser
moves freely between both monitors. I can stretch the right side of any
window all the way to the right side of my right monitor.

This is a fresh install of ubunu 9.04 64bit. I'm using an NVIDIA 8800GT
to drive both monitors. I haven't installed any special packages or
  anything other than running updated.

I haven't done much to try fixing this. I thought I'd report it as is
since this wasn't happening on Hardy and I thought you'd prefer it to
work out of the box as it did before and trying to fix it might
destroy any chance of figuring out the cause of the issue.

[Bug 447801] [NEW] system updates cannot be done

2009-10-10 Thread Hinterland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kpackagekit

1. Start KPackageKit.
2. Go to the Software Updates tab.
3. Click Select All Updates button.
4. Click Apply button.
5. System checks, then asks to install dependencies.
6. Click OK.
7. Pop-up: Failed to update package lists - KPackageKit with contents You do
not have the necessary privileges to perform this action.
8. Click OK.
9. First time displays crash and asks to report. When you tell it to report it
says it was unable because the error occurred before apport could gather
information. This does not happen on subsequent attempts.

Result: System cannot be upgraded!

[Bug 433925] Re: Karmic livecd wont boot due to graphics card not working with opensource nvidia drivers

2009-10-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nv

My graphics card ASUS Nvidia 9600GT does not work with the opensource
nvidia drivers, as a result the live CD for Karmic will not boot.

X seems to fail silently so never falls back to the failsafe settings
  (and using vesa drivers).

This happening with Karmic Alpha 6 live CD, but also happened with
Jaunty live CD as well. Same thing will happen if try to start X without
  an xorg.conf file.

Is there someway to blacklist this card so that X selects the vesa
  drivers ?

[Bug 412469] Re: [karmic] nv driver triggers seemingly random lockups on GeForce 7300 GT

2009-10-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nv

I was using the nvidia driver without issue up until recently when it
started to corrupt textures (http://twitpic.com/de7ru). I've since
tried to move to nv, but it is randomly locking up X. For what it's
worth, this often occurs at GDM or during login when gnome-session
starts spawning an infinite number of nautilus processes due to bug
  325973.

I've attached a full backtrace, strace, and version information. I am
not using an xorg.conf configuration file.

[Bug 447803] [NEW] closing screen/lid results in flickering and high CPU usage by Xorg

2009-10-10 Thread Dan Lenski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This is a brand new Acer AS1410 laptop, running i386 Ubuntu Karmic,
Netbook Remix. The graphics adapter is Intel X4500MHD (8086:2a42 PCI
ID), supported by the i915 kernel driver.

Yesterday, I tried closing the screen lid to save power while listening
to music. The music began to stutter when I did this, and the fan came
on. After I opened the lid again, several windows continued to flicker
for 10-20 seconds, and running top showed that the Xorg server was
consumed 80-100% of the CPU cycles.

Inspecting the /var/log/messages, I find the following error repeatedly
rapidly when the screen is closed:

Oct 10 01:59:56 dlenski-laptop kernel: [ 1292.698045] i915 :00:02.0:
DVI-D-2: no EDID data

Oct 10 02:00:20 dlenski-laptop kernel: [ 1336.721312] i2c-adapter i2c-4: unable

Oct 10 02:00:20 dlenski-laptop kernel: [ 1336.721316] i915 :00:02.0:
DVI-D-2: no EDID data

Apparently, the i915 driver fails to acquire information about the LCD
panel when the lid is closed???

Disabling the screen by some other mechanism, such as running xset dpms
force off, does not seem to cause this problem.

This bug is similar to, but not identical to,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/156824, which also involves problems that appear after
closing the lid on a laptop with the i915 graphics driver.

[Bug 422798] Re: Blank screen on Dell Inspiron mini after update

2009-10-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-psb

Today I updated the xserver-xorg-video-psb driver to version
0.31.0-0ubuntu1~904um1 from the repository and after restart of X I got
only a blank screen. I had to add IgnoreACPI option to my X conf to
get it working again on the Dell Inspiron mini 10, probably this should
  be detected automatically.

[Bug 411202] Re: Kernel update breaks driver

2009-10-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-psb

I and several other people have been having problems with the
xserver-xorg-video-psb driver when upgrading kernels.
  Doing...

  apt-get remove psb-kernel-source
  apt-get install psb-kernel-source

...after installing the new kernel, running from it either on low
resolution or on text console, solves the problem. Could you manage to
make that run automatically on each kernel update?

Further details on the following threads:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-psb/+bug/386130
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-psb/+bug/406651

If those details are needed in this thread, I will be happy to bring the
  relevant information here.

[Bug 406529] Re: intel poulsbo (psb): kernel BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000000

2009-10-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

I get the attached crash when trying to load the psb module. Compiled
  with dkms or precompiled.

I've already tried kernel 2.6.30-rc2 (with a patched module) as well, without
success.
  So it's probably a bug in ubuntu mobile ppa's psb-modules / psb-kernel-source.

I use Ubuntu 9.04 with the ubuntu mobile ppa on a MSI Wind U110.

Please let me know if you need any more information.

[Bug 447807] [NEW] two items for awn in software center

2009-10-10 Thread GenBattle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

This isn't so much a bug with software center as the software
repositories themselves, but software center is doing some weird stuff
too, so i thought i'd tag it anyway.

All the info about my OS and package versions should be in the attached
reports (9.10 beta, latest packages as at the time of this post).

I opened the ubuntu software center to install AWN (Avant Window
Navigator). First i did a search using the search bar and found AWN
Manager, only one item (screenshot awn_manager.png), and installed it.
I try to access AWN properties (from the system-preferences menu) and i
get an error (fatal).

Later, while browsing the software center i found another package called
Avant Window Navigator. Installing this fixed the errors with AWN.

What i find perplexing is that there are two packages for this in the software
center, and even more perplexing is that only one shows up when i search awn,
even though they both contain awn in the title/description. If i search avant
they both come up.
The packages need to be merged or AWN Manager needs to be removed (and Avant
Window Navigator should show up for a search of awn.

Another option is to set Avant Window Navigator as a dependency of AWN
manager.

[Bug 447805] [NEW] Misaligned applets in GDM

2009-10-10 Thread Manuel Muradás
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

(I don't thinks this is a bug, but I don't know how to fill an
Enhancement Request with ubuntu-bug command, sorry.)

Language, Keyboard and Session applets are misaligned with the user selection
box in GDM login screen.
This seems more noticeable in very large screens.
They look centered in relation with the space between the left edge of the
screen and the accessibility/clock/exit applets.

Maybe a picture helps me to explain this better (I have attached
GDM.jpg).

[Bug 379052] Re: [regression] Broadcom 4312 Not working in 9.10 (Kernel 2.6.30 restricted modules ?)

2009-10-10 Thread Javier Acuña Ditzel
Same issue here with Karmic beta (linux 2.6.31-11-generic) on HP Mini
110-1030NR.

I could fix it following the steps described in:
http://art.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8008760

No Internet access nor live CD needed. Just a couple of commands on
the terminal.

Hi,
This platform specific issue may be caused by some potential system BIOS bug.
Can anyone dump the DSDT table of the system BIOS on HP EliteBook 8530p with
ATI Radeon HD 3650?

[Bug 445889] Re: no sound from integrated speakers (Realtek ALC269, snd-hda-intel driver)

2009-10-10 Thread Dan Lenski
Well... after playing around in Linux for a while, trying to get the
internal speakers to work, I went back to check the Windows settings.
And *now* the internal speakers don't work in Windows either. Vey
strange. I tried a hard reboot, tried removing and reinstalling the
battery, tried reinstalling the Realtek Audio drivers in Windows...
still nothing.

Is it possible that this hardware stores some state in NVRAM or
something like that, which neither Windows nor Linux driver normally
accesses??

Please sync emma 0.6-4 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
As stated by Scottk, and I've checked it also, the changes has been integrated
in Debian and the package now builds fine with python2.6

Changelog entries since current karmic version 0.6-3ubuntu2:

emma (0.6-4) unstable; urgency=low

  * Pass --prefix=/usr to setup.py install (Python = 2.6 uses /usr/local by
default, Closes: 547816)
  * Install emma in private directory and remove current from
XS-Python-Version
  * Convert to python-support
- add preist file to remove old .pyc files
  * Standards-Version bumped to 3.8.3 (no changes needed)

Is there any way to modify KMS, workaround, something?

[Bug 447811] [NEW] All audio stops when playing audio/video in firefox, killing FF restores audio

2009-10-10 Thread Aaron C. de Bruyn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Apologies if this isn't the correct package to report on.

Audio works great on my system until I try to play audio or video in Firefox.
I am able to use vlc, mplayer, audacious, etc...to play a wide variety of audio
file and audio as part of a video without issues.

If I start a new firefox session, things continue to work correctly.

In that new session, if I surf to youtube (for example) and attempt to
watch a video, I get no sound output a few frames of jerky video and
then the video hangs.

The following events go into my syslog:
Oct 9 23:20:53 hoth pulseaudio[21455]: sink-input.c: Failed to create sink
input: too many inputs per sink.
Oct 9 23:20:53 hoth pulseaudio[21455]: sink-input.c: Failed to create sink
input: too many inputs per sink.
Oct 9 23:20:53 hoth pulseaudio[21455]: sink-input.c: Failed to create sink
input: too many inputs per sink.
Oct 9 23:20:53 hoth pulseaudio[21455]: sink-input.c: Failed to create sink
input: too many inputs per sink.
Oct 9 23:20:53 hoth pulseaudio[21455]: sink-input.c: Failed to create sink
input: too many inputs per sink.

If I switch away from firefox to mplayer, vlc, etc...I am able to play movies,
but I get no sound.

If I go back to firefox and quit, the firefox interface disappears but
the firefox process is left running. At one point I left it for 15
minutes and finally had to kill -9 it.

Right after I kill -9 firefox, I get the following three events in my
syslog:

Oct 9 23:21:07 hoth pulseaudio[21455]: ratelimit.c: 2 events suppressed
Oct 9 23:21:07 hoth pulseaudio[21455]: sink-input.c: Failed to create sink
input: too many inputs per sink.
Oct 9 23:21:07 hoth pulseaudio[21455]: sink-input.c: Failed to create sink
input: too many inputs per sink.

And I am suddenly able to play sound in all my apps again.

[Bug 447817] [NEW] System frezes after fscking root

2009-10-10 Thread Jon Severinsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mountall

I have both / and /home on seperate luks encrypted partitions. / is
decrypted using my passkey by the initramfs and /home is decrypted using
a keyfile stored on / by the init scripts.

After upgrading from mountall 0.1.8 to 0.2.0 my system foze at boot. The
last things it does before freezing is loading apparmor, fscking /boot
and fscking /. It never gives any output related to decrypring or
fscking /home.

After some trial and error I found a workaround:
In grub I replaced ro quiet splash with text rw init=/bin/bash. I don't
know if text is nessesary in the final version of the workaround, but during
some previous trials I got a hung X with no ability to switch to text console.
Then I entered my passphrase for / as usual.
After I while I got a root prompt and issuedd the following commands:
mkdir /dev/shm /dev/pts # Don't know if this was nessesary, but df errored out
becouse they was missing
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdb2 faolain-home # This is my home partition
mount -a
mount -o remount,ro / # As the system otherwise hangs while fscking root
exec init
At this point the boot sequence resumes. First it fscks / (but not /boot or
/home), then it tries to decrypt my three luks partions (/, swap and /home),
but ofcourse / and /home fails (as they are already decrypted), and then the
rest of the init scripts run and I get a login prompt (textual as that is what
I requested in grub).

At this point I downloaded the mountall 0.1.8 deb using wget and
installed it using dpkg -i, and after the next reboot it started
working again.

I havn't quite figgured out what exactly caused the problem, but I think
mountall tried to fsck /dev/mapper/faolain-home before cryptsetup got a
chance to decrypt it. This is as it fscked /boot before running
cryptsetup, and I believe /boot and /home should be fscked at the same
time, as they have the same pass value in /etc/fstab

[Bug 447816] [NEW] Automatic fsck leaves partition inaccessible without any notification.

2009-10-10 Thread jocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: e2fsprogs

I don't know if this is the correct package to file this bug against, but here
it is:
In karmic, when an automatic fsck is started on a non-system partition during
boot, the system continues the boot process as it should while the fsck is run
in the background. This is an improvement over the earlier behaviour (that the
entire boot process was paused while waiting for fsck to finish).
My problem is that as the fsck process continues for several minutes after the
boot has finished, the partition remains unmounted (and unmountable) without
any notification to the user why this happens. The only way to know what's
going on is to specifically check in the system monitor, top, ps, etc. if
e2fsck is running.
Once the fsck is done, the partition gets mounted automatically as it should,
so that's not the problem.

Shouldn't the user be notified why the partition is inaccessible?
Is it possible to get a notification (after login) saying something like:
A file system integrity check on the device /dev/sdb2 is running in the
background. The disk will be accessible when this is ready
Even better if there would also be a progress bar or an estimated time plus the
option to cancel it (and reschedule it to the next boot).

[Bug 444674] Re: Mouse behaves strange on clicking in graphical environment

2009-10-10 Thread Thomas Runge
I don't think Claus' problem is clearly related to this one, as I am
definitely experiencing this problem with the trackpoint, only. It does
not seem to be related to the touchpad or external mouse.

[Bug 430374] Re: init: mountall main process terminated with status 1

2009-10-10 Thread Wladimir Mutel
Just have had this behaviour after upgrading my Ubuntu 9.10 (32-bit, on ASUS
Z99Le laptop) today morning and rebooting
(retyping last console lines by hand) :

Done.
Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ...
Done.
init: mountall main process (382) killed by SEGV signal
rm: cannot remove `/forcefsck': Read-only file system
init: mountall post-stop process (383) terminated with status 1

then it halts until I press Ctrl-Alt-Del. then it reboots normally, and
everything is repeated again.
mountall package version is 0.2.0. Booting from USB drive and downgrading it to
0.1.8 makes the problem go away.

lines in my fstab :

proc/proc procdefaults0 0
UUID=9403dc3f-f1ad-4d12-9a39-c77f673b1993 /   ext3
defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1

/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec 0 0

my /etc/init/mountall.conf is not changed from what comes originally
with the package .
