I returned to Bhubaneswar and updated the kernel to 2.6.31.15.28 and tried
intel driver and the system was freezing as before. Today I updated the kernel
to 2.6.31.16.29 and again switched to intel driver and there is no freeze today
so far. I will report if the system freezes once again.

Just that the recent update to Linux 2.6.31-16-generic has had also similar
problem than the Linux 2.6.31-15 version.
But, now with both above Linux image versions (while before the update
to the -16 version the -15 version didn't boot at all) at least the

This is certainly not a python-support problem.
totem uses libpython to test-load pygtk. People reported here that
removing /usr/local/bin/python helped with this situation, but totem
doesn't run that. Could it be that you removed /usr/loca/lib/python*
instead? That would be a more plausible
Ok I created new profile and disabled all extension but no help there.
Disabling javascript helps.

Confirming this bug still present upgrading Jaunty = Karmic a couple days ago.
The presence of skip-bdb in my.cnf (and keeping existing config) prevented
mysql-server restart after upgrade, and made package upgrade fail.

I cam confirm this bug. I'm using Xubuntu 9.10 with the latest updates
installed.
The autoload subtitle option is activated. I also noticed that totem freezes
only if I try to open a video file by double clicking it.
