oops. I screwed things up. I added the interfaces to /etc/network.interfaces.
When I removed them, I reverted back to my old behavior, except that ethernet
worked on boot. nm-applet reappears.
But when I unplug eth0 and connect to the wireles, /etc/resolv.conf is blank
again

However, although eth0 works if connected on boot, after the above test,
I reinserted the cable. resolv.conf is correct. But ping yields
operation not permitted so I guess I am back to where I started.

I couldn't get an answer about backporting k3b to karmic from the devs,
you could try to install the lucid packages from
http://packages.ubuntu.com, but I can't say if that will work.
