Thank you for your suggestion. But I used several different devices and
all available ports; they all show the same behaviour as described
above. After dualbooting into Windows XP, USB 2 works normal. If I
unbind ehci-hcd, also no problem (but USB 1 speed). Native USB 1 devices
have no problem.
Just one extra comment:
This will not work on Lucid. Since the kernel 2.6.34, some block layer
functions have been renamed. Therefore, under 2.6.32, this will not
compile.
It is, however, in theory, possible to hack the source code to rename
the mentioned functions. One example error is here:

Aha, a clue!
The error message is 'utf8' codec can't decode byte 0xeb, and the
message contained a ë. Byte 0xeb in the *ISO-8859-1* character encoding
is ë!
This means that it is very likely that the message is not encoded with
UTF-8 at all, but with ISO-8859-1, and Gwibber for some reason tries

Uhm - well, there is a work-around for this problem. As has been
pointed-out elsewhere, effectively, if /etc/default/grub is modified so
that
GRUB_TERMINAL=console
is un-commented, or instead, the kernel command line is modified to
include vga=normal, as in
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= blah

I cannot access to that config file now (the system is no longer
installed), but the problem is that it does not add an entry for the
newly installed system (the second log).
After the installation of the first system we got:
