After every new release of ubuntu (the last I am trying now is 10.10) I

Just to give a comprehensive report, hence the problem is no longer
present on this system.
Running/installed kernel: 2.6.35-22-generic (2.6.35-22.35)
DKMS modules used:
- 855gm-fix-dkms
openvt: vt 1 is in use; command aborted
use `openvt -f' to force.
The weird thing about this is that getty does no check on VT_GETSTATE,
so it will happily let run multiple gettys on the same tty.
... os openvt looks a bit overzealous. tty1 only counts as used
because it is assigned
Interesting to note that kbd/src/deallocvt.c contains this:

This is decided in userspace without asking the kernel, suggesting that

#12 The link you refer to is for issues with ATI graphics cards.
I am not sure if that is the same or a different bug to this one which
is for intel Core i3 what looks like Core i5 chips.
If you have a DVI or HDMI output these seem to work fine. The problem
appears only on the VGA output.

The latest update to libdrm-nouveau in maverick caused this regression,
when I boot up
I can report the same problem, using onboard. I right-click on the
terminal and choose Open Terminal. This creates a new terminal window
which not maximized, receives no decoration and cannot get focus. Once
every 5 tries or so.
