None of the examples you cite are using PolicyKit actually. Try setting
a system connection using NetworkManager config tool for example, or
installing packages using updates-manager.

For at least two of these reporters, it appears to be a hardware issue.
That does not mean the bug is not present for others, and it does not
eliminate hardware for others.

With the advent of compiz-unity, Terminal (gnome-terminal) doesn't show
its menu items in the global menu bar anymore. They still aren't shown
in the windows themselves, but now they also aren't shown in the unity
bar.

I know we can not ship proprietary drivers for NVidia and other on the
Ubuntu Live CD, but would it be possible to have ubiquity detect a
proprietary piece of hardware, ask user if he wants the driver
installed, download driver if network connect

Yeah, the latter result is more what I expected. There's a bug and a fix
for that, but nobody committed it for such a long time... Basically, you
can't use shares-admin since 10.04...
Be sure to remove /etc/init/nfs*, /etc/init.d/nfs*, /etc/init/samba and
/etc/init.d/samba if these files exist.

compiz unity, that state would be shown visually until I clicked on the
Empathy icon.
With the new unity, the icon pulses for a second or so, but then stays

Just to add info while I am looking through things:
I booted a maverick and a natty amd64 and a maverick i386 instance.
Comparing maverick and natty, one things was the compiler version. To
rule that out I compiled a natty kernel in a maverick chroot and tested
that on a t1.micro. Same fail. So it
