It turns out my analysis was off; the real culprit was in
pa_sndfile_format_from_string(). This bug has been fixed upstream in
12c3e97b (master) and in 84c8b23c (stable-queue).

We are affected by this bug too using Ubuntu 9.10. Very surprised that
it has lingered so long. This bug is not a paper cut. At minimum, the
user is annoyed. For some, the user experience is seriously negatively
impacted. Not fixing this issue could be due to insufficient resources

ntpdate is usually run manually.
Doing 'strings /usr/sbin/ntpdate | grep /etc/default/' shows no
reference to /etc/default/ntpdate.
The file /etc/default/ntpdate ships with Ubuntu.
This is confusing.
Either /etc/default/ntpdate should be used (fix ntpdate) or should not
(remove file from
