This is a logrotate issue and happens if the specified logfile directory (in this case /var/log/apache2) does not exist and the postrotate script contains a closing '}'. Therefore I don't think Jonathan's patch would fix the issue completely. OK. Do we have a test case for which my patch fails?
If the remaining issue is that my patch contains a closing '}', that is
easily solved, because the {} around the variable name are only there
for style reasons, and are not required.
Here is a modified patch without the {} . Is there a test case for
which this one fails?
If this issue is deemed significant enough to SRU for Hardy and Lucid,
then it seems easier to me to get a small patch to one script accepted,
than to get a newer version of logrotate accepted.
Is it better to backport the logrotate patch? To do both the logrotate
patch *and* fix the apache2 logrotate script?

Wow. A 6+ year old bug in basic network connectivity. My home router runs DD-WRT with DNSMasq enabled which ...is designed to provide DNS and, optionally, DHCP, to a small network. It can serve the names of local machines which are not in the global DNS. But DNSMasq was unable to resolve a hostname for my Ubuntu 10.10 machine, thus other machines failed to locate it. This broke BackupPC for me as it could never resolve the hostname and gave errors like this: Error: Can't find IP address for [myHostname] [myHostname] is a DHCP host, and I don't know its IP address. I checked the netbios name of [myIP_Address], and found that that machine is not [myHostname]. Until I see [myHostname] at a particular DHCP address, you can only start this request from the client machine itself. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: lxdm After installing Lubuntu 10.10 from CD, several packages are listed as being no longer needed and ready for removal by apt-get autoremove. This list of packages includes ecryptfs-utils and its dependencies keyutils and libecryptfs0 . These packages are used by lxdm to handle automounting of encrypted home directories, and removing them *breaks* this. If such a directory is mounted at the time of the autoremove, this results in an inconsistent package database (ecryptfs-utils is not removed because it is in use, but the others are, and it depends on them!). Proposed solution: Adding a Depends: ecryptfs-utils to lxdm should prevent this issue. I hope to provide a debdiff against the lxdm currently in maverick-proposed to do this, as proof of concept at least. The other packages which are set for autoremove after installing Lubuntu should also be checked and any that are not really OK to remove need to be depended on by an appropriate package. There is information in bug #635698 and bug #653628 which is relevant to this issue. #635698 is fixed and independent of this autoremove problem, and #635628 is filed against ecryptfs-utils which cannot force itself to stay installed. I also see strange behaviour with sync to vblank enabled. This are the symptoms that I see: · animations look jerky · openGL games also suffer from this symptoms · everything is slower than it should be. Even with sync to vblank disabled animations are not smooth and OpenGL apps are also affected. It looks like some frames get dropped. For testing I used a daily desktop image (Natty) and updated compiz and unity. I tested this on an Intel x4500HD (g45) chip. Maybe it is possible that compiz supports swap events if the driver supports it? Hello Hantho and others I just had the same 'exception(?)' when taking the command 'sudo apt-get upgrade'. I'd suppose this is no bug, due it lead not into an error while the upgrade process ran, but it's IMHO a lack, missing feature, whatever. As Dag Odenhall posted in the opening entry, he added the content of '/usr/share/python/debian_defaults'. It seems, that someone can avoid the issue, by replacing the line with the stuff from here: # all supported python versions supported-versions = python2.5, python2.6, python3.0 (or whatever Version) -- DON'T: So if any of newbies read this post. Please don't set python3.0 as standard! When I tried this, it lead into a bunch of bad errors. It seems to me, that a lot of python programs, packages and installers still aren't made to run this version. # the default python version default-version = python3.0 --- But one thing is, that I also don't understand what 'nothing to fix in maverick ' means. Why isn't e.g. my freshly installed python2.7 not in the list of the supported versions from debian_defaults? Unfortunately, I still don't understand the dependencies of the mentioned file. I‘ve been experiencing the same problem for a long time for USB sticks and USB drives. LaCie 750GB, SanDisk drives. I’ll try the proposal from Matej. It‘s annoying. The LaCie sometimes when I try to copy large amount of data, disconnects and I hear the harddisk search continuously for tracks. I need to restart the LaCie. Hope the solution proposed by Matej also fixes this problem. Same here. Installing and configuring LMT on my Eee PC 1005HA significantly improved battery life over the stock pm-utils. I was actually surprised it wasn't installed by default.
