Hi Adrian,
For Natty, this patch unfortunately didn't land in the 2.6.38-10.46
release, but it is committed to the natty git repo and should be queued
for the next Natty kernel update. As such, I'm marking the Natty bug
task as Fix Committed.
For Oneiric, this patch is already included in the
3 months have elapsed since I commented out the quiet splash from
/etc/default/grub without any boot hangs. On this SL500 Lenovo laptop,
the workaround resolves the boot hang problem.

It would appear that another process had locked
/var/cache/debconf/config.dat when you tried to upgrade your system.
fuser -v /var/cache/debconf/config.dat will return the locking process
if any - try killing it
