I think this may be more a problem with jockey-gtk. The proprietary
drivers it shows available all say that it is the driver needed for
Unity, however i am using the fallback Gnome desktop because my hardware
can't handle Unity. To fix this I think will be my going to the nvidia
site and
it seems this was an issue previously

so i have fixed the issue but it does not lie with empathy, it is with
telepathy-butterfly and the use of certain domain email addresses with
login.
for anyone else with this problem, completely remove
discovered after removing telepathy-butterfly that the problem is fixed.
