Dave Lentz's suggestion of linux-image-generic-lts-backport-oneiric
kernel works. Kernel 3.0.0.15 does not exhibit the issue but required

Regarding Xubuntu and having no applet at all displayed imho is a different

Re-linking doesn't work in version 3.3.3.
Do you know if 3.3.4/3.3.5 should behave differently (due to code
changes)? Currently I can't install these due to missing dependencies.
