I think that's somehow related to the specific VM technology that you use,
vagrantc also mentioned something about it but I could never reproduce it with
VirtualBox.
What VM and which virtual graphics driver are you using? Is your color depth 24
or 32? Does it happen with other color depths?

Right now I am able to reproduce this when I force the filesystem check
(touch /forcefsck) on a real machine. I can't reproduce this with
similar kvm setup. As Daviey pointed out, this may be a race condition.

Actually, the changelog in teh description is misleading. 1.8-1 was in
natty, and it got removed from Ubuntu because it wasn't compatible with
GNOME 3. Now 1.8-2 has apparently fixed this.
