only seems to occur with Unity (4 5, 11.10 12.04). I can't reproduce
this bug with upstream compiz-core or in Gnome Classic (with compiz).

update did not consider the system setting and I had to set it somewhere

With a daily-live 20120417 installation, I can confirm the the problem
seems resolved at least for new installs. Attaching printer seems to
consistently now again upload the firmware also on subsequent attaches
and after a reboot, and after power-cycling the printer.

wasn't usable from a GNOME Shell extension, so has been
removing rhythmbox and then apt-get autoremove fixed the problem for me,
upgrade is currently running. Maybe the GUI should point to the errors in
/var/log/dist-upgrade/ ... then I would have probably found it myself.
