I can't recall exactly how it looked. The stretching iirc wasn't just
horizontal, it was in both axes: as though I was zoomed in on the top
left corner of the framebuffer. The stretching wasn't a straight

Edit: So if I don't disable my tv in gnome display settings before
unplugging hdmi and the cursor is on the tv it will crash.

I have managed to narrow down the issue I think. Xorg seems to only
crash when the cursor is on the screen that is being disconnected. If I
have my cursor on the laptop screen before disconnected everything is
fine. Furthermore, if the cursor is on the screen, the workaround is to
go into display s

Well, my attempt to re-open this issue, bug 982767, was marked invalid.
But, I had a brief email talk with Release Manager Kate Stewart, since
she had reviewed this bug a year ago, in comment #2. To summarize,
