This bug has also stung me many times. It seems to happen at any time,
one time it happened when I was away from my computer. It felt like X
(or another process) was getting killed because it happened with no
warning and was more-or-less instant. Though I can't confirm this, it
*seems* like Unity
similar issue but generally can reach the desktop using nomodeset and
install and reboot using nomodeset to desktop but once the nvidia
proprietery driver is installed I am then unable to boot to login screen
even adding nomodeset

I've found that the best workaround is to disable oneconf (so as to
avoid removing software-center and ubuntu-desktop).
sudo chmod a-x /usr/share/oneconf/oneconf-service

1/ read [or mark as read] all items [markmfolder holding them as read]
2/ delete recreate the Unread folder [maybe using option rebuild would do?]
3/ create your own top level folder move all other folders into it.
