FYI, I am no longer using 11.10, now on 12.04. It does not have the
problem. I did make the changes in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, and
12.04 does not seem to be restoring dpms to "enabled". I have no idea
whether the problem persists in 11.10, as I am no longer using it.

Also note that for me, if I hit super (for dash) it does not display.
But dash does open in the background so that if I then log in it is
already disabled.
If I hold down super, then the shortcut keys help page displays over the

source radeon drivers, single monitor setup. This bug appears for me.
My launcher is set to autohide and I can interact with it via mouse,

Whee, I tried kernel 3.4.0-rc5 from Ubuntu mainline kernels and it
works! \o/
I run acpi_listen and then close the lid. With kernels starting with
3.0.0-rc2 (and up to Precise's 3.2.0-24) nothing happens. With 3.4.0-rc5
(and 3.0.0-rc1 and older) I see this:

What kind of graphics card is this (lspci -nn|grep VGA)? Please attach
your Xorg.0.log.

No, you cannot use the -intel package from 11.10, because it is build
for an older xserver version.
Xorg log says:
