thanks for reporting the bug.
The background-color in the two screenshots is not dark grey, but black
(as in #000). Black isn't really used as a background-color in Greybird,
so ad-hoc I don't see how this can be a Greybird-bug. Could you please
test whether this bug is reproducible with

Shutdown does not work for me on 32bit 'precise'.
For me issue was resolved via switching from proprietary nvidia drivers
ver.295.40 to nouveau driver.
When using nvidia drivers shutdown issue occured when I run some video
in VLC. I was unable to switch to tty1 (just blank screen) -- in this
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

Here is what I did to fix it. I only use VPN on the wired connection. I
guess a similar approach will work for secure/VPN over wireless.
cd /usr/share/icons
# Make a copy of the existing icon theme
# pvm is me. Invent whatever name you like here
sudo cp -a elementary-xfce-dark pvm
cd pvm
# in
Forget it, it's an ordering problem. (And I can't find how to close a
