service doesn't check to see if there are any telepathy accounts already
online at startup, it just connects to the service and waits for a
signal for changes.

I can confirm that this exact same behaviour happens for me.
I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 11.04 (in which I was using Gnome 2 and the
places menu was working fine.
I have attached .local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite (the one from before the
upgrade).

I've just reported this bug on the Kernel Bugzilla, since the ipw2200 driver is
in mainline, and the bug still occurs with recent kernel versions
(3.0.0-16-generic).
I've now found this bug on launchpad by googling, so I'm posting here too,
