I have tried different settings for mouse sensitivity and acceleration. No
obvious improvement, but I noticed that the sensitivity slider changes by
itself.
Doing some tests I found that the acceleration slider stayed where it was put
between close and reopen of System Settings.

I've now tested my experimental XDamageReport changes and found they
provide no improvement here. But that's with NVIDIA, and they never did
provide much improvement with the NVIDIA driver. Likewise, skipping
damage events in unity itself provides no benefit.

I bought a new computer recently and needed to do a fresh install of
Ubuntu 12.04. The problem does not exist on this machine so I suppose it
is a problem with upgrading Ubuntu to 12.04.

There's a workaround for this: in about:config, set
browser.search.defaultenginename to the name of the selected search
engine.
This changes the search engine used by the context menu, and the
destination of Ctrl+K. You'll have to do this each time you change your
selected search engine.
A fix
…There is actually a preference browser.search.selectedEngine — is it
possible that the context menu and Ctrl+K are referring to
browser.search.defaultenginename when they should be referring to this
instead?

I am afraid you are wrong.
The quiet boot and the quick boot and splash boot are options you disable at
Bios Setup, not at any prompt from the Ubuntu (or any other distro) cd / image
/ anything_you_are_booting_from.
If you disable this at Bios, pretty much it gonna work.
