I am using unity, but the dialog I get is not the (rather small) one used by
gksudo. That one gets the focus as it should. Here I see a dialog that seems
unique to gnome-control-center (why doesn't it use the gksudo mechanism anyway?)

I'm accompanying an affected user and we are focusing on a manual
method:

I'm on a desktop so I suspect the only time the power saving stuff kicks
in is when the monitors go to sleep... I'm guessing that for a laptop
the driver may try to manage the power consumption more aggressively,
and so cause this to happen more often.

Nope, not 64-bit only. I have the same problem on 32-bit (Logitech
Anywhere MX, reconnecting the dongle helps). Wasn't the original
reporter on i386 as well?

P.S. Thanks for your comment about Ubuntu! For me as a developer one of
my favorite things about Ubuntu is that I get to interact directly with

in it. When I set up Thunderbird on a new computer, it takes a while to
download all of those emails (presumably for its full-text search). If
a new email arrives during that time, there's a 50% chance
