when I remove the plymouth entries entirely from /etc/init (not neat,
I know) I get the same blank screen and lock but without the plymouth
error message. Any ideas on how to check if it's a framebuffer issue?
I can confirm this too, also disabling DRI in xorg.conf doesn't work

I would recommend against doing that, the easier is probably to take the
source and rebuild it locally or throw it to a ppa targetted to quantal.
You might want to try to just download and dpkg -i
After the error, I applied the upgrade from the command line and it

I get the same symptoms but I think it's for a different reason:

The source code is in the .vala files. The .c files are generated from
there and almost unreadable. So, when making changes, they should be
made in the .vala files and then the affected c files need to be
regenerated. To fix this bug I had to patch a .vala file, so the
corresponding .c file

It started happening after an upgrade from 12.04 with Kernel Linux
3.2.0-33-generic.
Then I did a clean 12.10 install and the issue was reproducible as well.
Downgraded the Kernel of the 12.10 clean install to Kernel Linux
3.2.0-33-generic and the issue is gone. Seems to be introduced after
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.
