There can be many causes for this specific bug, I would recommend
updating to mesa from quantal-proposed, and a current development
kernel. The more recent kernels increase fault reporting slightly, and
the mesa upload might fix some of the causes of hangs, but no guarantee!

I found the problem, however it was not directly a firefox problem.
There was a problem with d-bus messages, which also slowed down many
other applications. After removing .dbus, .pulse and .pulse-cookie
directory from $HOME, the issue vansihed.

On a fresh boot, clicking on the Firefox link on the sidebar in Unity
causes Ubuntu to freeze completely. No response to anything other than
ctrl-alt-shift-prntscr-b R-E-I-S-U all show no response. Tested in Gnome
shell where it works fine. Using Ubuntu Tweak to clear cache ha
Same symptoms: "clicked on Not Installed(residual config) then clicked
on the right side and it crashed".
The two packages with residual configurations are libcogl-pango0 and
libcogl11.
