Using kernel 3.11, pretty much the same stuff happens. It works the
first time, then after a reboot I won't be able to get sound until I do
something like boot into Windows 7, reboot and boot into kernel 3.8,

We absolutely do not need to do this for /etc/adjtime. /etc/adjtime is not
used in Ubuntu, and shouldn't even be on the filesystem.

Same problem here. Bypassing Grub solves the problem for me, so this
problem is definately related to Grub...
