I have a laptop ASUS M51TR and after upgrading to kubuntu 11.04 there is no
more screen backlight on boot.
I can see grub menu, then backlight turns off.
The backlight turns on only on KDE startup and works fine.

I had this issue today and after read this thread I "cat"ed
/etc/sysctl.d/30-SpiderOak.conf and I discovered that this file has no
new line at the end. Just added a new line and then the upgrade worked
ok.
I deinstalled Spider Oak a time ago, so I think I can remove this file.

It seems to work in 64-bit Ubuntu however doesn't work in 32-bit Ubuntu,
neither 12.04 nor 13.10. I made some investigation and found problem in
strtol function behaves differently on 32-bit and 64-bit systems.
For example:
64-bit strtol("fff0", &endptr, 16), result is 4294967280
32-bit strtol
