FWIW, I can no longer reproduce this behaviour. I've survived several
days of suspend/resume cycles while using an external display. Instead

Not a lot of info to give sadly. I suspended my laptop via the gear icon
menu in the top right of the GUI. When I pressed the power button to
wake it up again the screen was black with a message about usb
something and something about a read error. The boot process
I've also noticed that when I connect the display adaptor I get this on
dmesg:
