sorry I don't know how to properly merge something outside the MoM

[Bug 1354602] Re: package rpcbind 0.2.0-7ubuntu1.2 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/man/man8/rpcinfo.8.gz', which is also in package libc-bin 2.15-0ubuntu10.6

2014-08-12 Thread Andy Whitcroft
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
A missing replaces: from rpcbind against the version of libc-bin in 12.04
means that upgrades may fail if libc-bin and rpcbind aren't unpacked in the
right order.

  [Test case]
  1. Install rpcbind on 12.04.
  2. dist-upgrade to 14.04.
  3. confirm that the upgrade fails due to rpcbind being unpacked before
libc-bin is upgraded.
  4. enable trusty-proposed in sources.list.
  5. apt-get -f install
  6. apt-get install rpcbind
  7. confirm that the package install completes successfully
  8. confirm that apt-get dist-upgrade completes successfully

  [Regression potential]
Any changes to the package relationships may have an unforeseen detrimental
impact on apt's resolver. However, these are non-trivial to find in advance
and this change is locally correct with regards to package relationships.

Ubuntu is in sync with Debian on tomcat7, and it sounds like this is a

2014-08-12 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for your report.

Upgrade paths to and from packages installed via PPAs are not supported
in the Ubuntu archive. I suggest that you remove the affected package
before trying again.

You can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

Since we use this bug tracker to track bugs in Ubuntu, rather than
configuration problems, I'm marking this bug as Invalid. This helps us
to focus on fixing bugs in Ubuntu itself.

If you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem,
explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem
specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

[Bug 1355813] [NEW] LXC containers reset bridge MTU on start/restart

2014-08-12 Thread James Page
Public bug reported:

Context:

juju + MAAS deployed OpenStack environment, misc services deployed under
LXC on the bootstrap node, interfaces configured for jumbo frames - note
that I had to manually set the LXC container interfaces to mtu 9000
before the bridge would do the same.

Action:

Reboot one of the containers; MTU on br0 resets from 9000 - 1500.

This feels like more of a 'we need a better way to orchestrate MTU
configuration across different services' so raising tasks for MAAS and
Juju as well.

If you want to test I have a patched erlang in:

I think it forces the right behaviour in epmd:

[Bug 1312507] Re: rabbitmq-server fails to start on a IPv6-Only environment/epmd is not IPv6 enabled

2014-08-12 Thread James Page
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ Users of RabbitMQ in IPv6 environments are unable to stop/start/restart
rabbitmq.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ On and IPv6 only server:
+ sudo apt-get install rabbitmq-server
+ ...
+ * Starting message broker rabbitmq-server
+  * FAILED - check /var/log/rabbitmq/startup_\{log, _err\}
+...fail!
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ The fix for this issue is in erlang itself; enabling IPv6 support in epmd is
a compile time option so there is scope for regression. Testing should ensure
that existing IPv4 deployments of erlang tools do not regress with this change
(validated RMQ already against PPA packages).
+
+ [Original Bug Report]
  Guys,

  I'm trying to install rabbitmq-server on Ubuntu 14.04 on a IPv6-Only

[Bug 1355813] Re: LXC containers reset bridge MTU on start/restart

2014-08-12 Thread Serge Hallyn
Hi James,

does setting lxc.network.mtu = 9000 in the container configuration file
work?

Depending on how juju creates the containers, you may be able to simply
add that line to the bottom of /etc/lxc/default.conf to get the desired
result.

Hello Corey, or anyone else affected,

Accepted keystone into trusty-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/keystone/1:2014.1.2.1-0ubuntu1 in a
few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at

[Bug 1356012] [NEW] maas incorrectly overmanages DNS reverse zones

2014-08-12 Thread LaMont Jones
Public bug reported:

when I configure maas to manage DNS and DHCP for 10.89.64.0/20, it
creates a reverse zone for 89.10.in-addr.arpa.

If 10.89.0.0/16 is in use for other things, and only 10.89.64.0/20 was
delegated to scalingstack, then no reverse DNS can happen, since the
parent zone will win the argument.

In this case, maas needs to create the following zones, and properly populate
them (nsupdate will do the right thing if the zone declarations are correct):
64.89.10.in-addr.arpa
65.89.10.in-addr.arpa
...
78.89.10.in-addr.arpa
79.89.10.in-addr.arpa
(a total of 16 zones.)

Seen on trusty:
ii maas-dns 1.5.2+bzr2282-0ubuntu0.2 all MAAS DNS server

Please let me know what other information you need.

[Bug 1356113] [NEW] PHP5 session clean cron job causes OOM

2014-08-12 Thread Steve Kamerman
Public bug reported:

The php5 file-based session cleaner script /var/lib/php5/sessionclean is
extremely expensive, taking over 10 seconds to run on my laptop, even
when no PHP file-based session storage is enabled and the system is
idle. My servers, on the other hand, are completely overwhelmed by this
script, which runs every 30 minutes by default.

The script performs an lsof +d /var/lib/php5, which can itself take
several minutes on my servers when they serving peak traffic of about
500 req/sec. This lsof command is extremely expensive (imagine
iterating 5000 threads/procs, each of which has dozens or hundreds of
open files). As a result of the load of this command, the server's
connections back up leading to an out of memory condition (OOM) at which
point the kernel tells oom_killer to start killing processes.

The really kicker here is that my session management is not done with
files (most high-performance PHP sites would not be), so all this work
is done in vain.

As a subject-matter expert in PHP and GNU/Linux, I recommend we update
/usr/lib/php5/sessionclean and add /usr/lib/php5/sessionstorage
New versions: https://gist.github.com/kamermans/27218b1a6dd61756b647

The new sessionstorage script simply prints out which
session.save_handlers are enabled in the installed PHP versions (not
including the cli). The improved sessionclean script uses the
sessionstorage to run only if the files session.save_handler is
enabled, thus removing the lsof burden on most high-performance servers.
Note that I am doing some creative scripting since Bash-style arrays are
not available in Dash.

For reference, I am running on AWS c3.xlarge instances with NGINX,
PHP5-FPM and Redis (no MySQL, no sessions at all). sessionclean kills
my instances when the total CPU usage is around 20% (where 100% is a
load of 4.0 on my 4-vCPU server), so I have a lot more room for requests
if this is fixed.

[Bug 1356113] Re: PHP5 session clean cron job causes OOM

2014-08-12 Thread Steve Kamerman
On another note, why would we possibly need to run lsof every time we
need to cleanup sessions? This is a very inefficient and expensive
process. If someone knows how it came to be that this code was added, I
would be very curious. Also, I see that recent versions of Ubuntu
(14.04 for example) put a modules/ folder in /var/lib/php which is quite
disconcerting since there are potentially thousands of session files in
there as well.

[Bug 1355617] [NEW] plymouth ask-for-password unable to read keyboard input on Xen PV console (hvc0)

2014-08-12 Thread Richard Godbee
Public bug reported:

plymouth ask-for-password is unable to read keyboard input when the
console is the Xen PV console device (hvc0).

Since the cryptroot script that the cryptsetup package installs on
initramfs's uses plymouth ask-for-password instead of
/lib/cryptsetup/askpass if plymouth is available, this causes the boot
process to hang at the password prompt when trying to boot with an
encrypted root device that needs the operator to type the password on
the console.

As a very hacky workaround, modifying /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts
/local-top/cryptroot to always use /lib/cryptsetup/askpass if
$cryptkeyscript is not set (see attached patch) and then regenerating
the initramfs with update-initramfs -u works as expected.

Specifying /lib/cryptsetup/askpass as the keyscript= using the kernel
command line (cryptopts=) and/or /etc/crypttab didn't work for
whatever reason, but I didn't spend a whole lot of time trying to figure
out why.

Some relevant system information:

Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty) on an amd64 Xen domU

The system was debootstrap'd under Finnix on a VM supplied by
Linode.com.

[Bug 1355624] [NEW] after upgrade to kernell 3.13.0-33 system fails to boot properly

2014-08-12 Thread Grzegorz Śliwiński
Public bug reported:

after today's upgrade to newest kernel (07/12/2014 - kernel 3.13.0-33) system
at first bot up, but the loading screen flickered heavily, but booted to normal
functioning login screen.
I've turned it off - and the flickering continued on turning off screen as
well. Another try resulted in my laptop panic signal. I was able to get only to
bios for about 10 minutes - couldn't even boot up to ubuntu live from usb.

Right now I booted to 3.13.0-32 kernel.

[Bug 1355626] [NEW] Sync wxwidgets3.0 3.0.1-3 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2014-08-12 Thread LocutusOfBorg
Public bug reported:

Please sync wxwidgets3.0 3.0.1-3 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * Merge from Debian unstable. (LP: #1349498) Remaining changes:
- Disable precompiled headers on arm64, which cause an FTBFS.

I think with the launchpad buildd migration this bug might be fixed, since I
cannot reproduce locally.
This will also fix some FTBFS in wxpython3.0 (already fixed, but the bug was in
wx3.0 code)

If the sync doesn't succeed in arm64 we can always enable the
precompiled headers again.

Changelog entries since current utopic version 3.0.1-2ubuntu1:

wxwidgets3.0 (3.0.1-3) unstable; urgency=medium

  [ Olly Betts ]

  * debian/control.in: Update Vcs-* fields to include the branch name.
(Thanks vcswatch)
  * debian/control.in: Drop Suggests: libstdc++-dev from -dev packages
- you need a C++ compiler installed for the -dev packages to be
useful, which should ensure the appropriate C++ runtime -dev package
is installed.
  * Split off the msw cross packages into debian/control.msw.in, which we
only include in the generated debian/control when building the cross
packages. This avoids source-only uploads erroneously ending up in
NEW.

  [ Gianfranco Costamagna ]

  * debian/control.in: Promote dependency of libwxgtk3.0-dev on
libgl1-mesa-dev | libgl-dev, xlibmesa-glu-dev | libglu-dev from
Suggests to Depends, as these are required to build code which uses
wxGLCanvas. Drop this dependency entirely from libwxgtk-media3.0-dev
and libwxgtk-webview3.0-dev as these both depend on libwxgtk3.0-dev,
and it is the latter which actually needs them. (Closes: #757638)

[Bug 1354110] Re: please merge openssl from debian

2014-08-12 Thread LocutusOfBorg
The new release as you said is almost all incorporating the patches, this is
why should be harmless to merge.
A good reason for a merge is that we reduce a lot the debian delta, moreover
there are two or three fixes in the debian packaging that might be useful to
cherry-pick (restart services for example).

But I think we can merge after utopic, it is up to you ;)

[Bug 1347721] Re: Saucy - Trusty upgrade failed: procps fails to configure

Installed and updated Saucy, enabled proposed, and ran apt-get install

Start-Date: 2014-08-11 23:15:49
Commandline: apt-get install apt
Upgrade: apt:i386 (0.9.9.1~ubuntu3.2, 0.9.9.1~ubuntu3.3), libapt-pkg4.12:i386
(0.9.9.1~ubuntu3.2, 0.9.9.1~ubuntu3.3)
End-Date: 2014-08-11 23:16:02

Then disabled proposed, refreshed the cache using update-manager and was
offered the upgrade via GUI so I proceeded and all went perfectly so I'm
marking this verification-done.

Many thanks.

But in doing that, I figured out that while QDBus is in qtbase,

[Bug 721896] Re: kswapd0 100% cpu usage

2014-08-12 Thread Stanislaw Halik
% grep /proc/[0-9]*/comm
% cat $(dirname $(grep kswapd /proc/[0-9]*/comm))/wchan; echo

Do this when irrational CPU usage occurs. Show wchan. If
contention_wait, there's a fix. Anyway wchan is helpful.

Reproduces. Specifically with the shift-f9 global effect, but not the
control+super mouse effect.

[Bug 1354602] Re: package rpcbind 0.2.0-7ubuntu1.2 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/man/man8/rpcinfo.8.gz', which is also in package libc-bin 2.15-0ubuntu10.6

2014-08-12 Thread Andy Whitcroft
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
A missing replaces: from rpcbind against the version of libc-bin in 12.04
means that upgrades may fail if libc-bin and rpcbind aren't unpacked in the
right order.

  [Test case]
  1. Install rpcbind on 12.04.
  2. dist-upgrade to 14.04.
  3. confirm that the upgrade fails due to rpcbind being unpacked before
libc-bin is upgraded.
  4. enable trusty-proposed in sources.list.
  5. apt-get -f install
  6. apt-get install rpcbind
  7. confirm that the package install completes successfully
  8. confirm that apt-get dist-upgrade completes successfully

  [Regression potential]
Any changes to the package relationships may have an unforeseen detrimental
impact on apt's resolver. However, these are non-trivial to find in advance
and this change is locally correct with regards to package relationships.

- Received an upgrade notice. I executed the upgrade procedures which indicated
529 packages need to be installed. Upgrade requesrted that I install the DVD.
of the ISO file I had downloaded. Upgrade did not complete and failed to
reboot. I had to use recovery mode in order to log back in. Again I received
a mesage indicvating that 244 files needed to be upgrade. This attempt alos
failed. Received various messages the there were dependencies issue and could
not continue the upgrade
