I have had a bit of success.
Everything is working again.
I did 3 things:
1. Removed all custom keybindings in dconf editor
2. Installed and the uninstalled xbindkeys
3. Made the system create an .Xmodmap in my user directory
Now all shortcuts are working, including a terminal script being run

#622462), but I have this problem under ubuntu 14.04, installed by a desktop
live CD from 26.08.2014

We've moved to the intel-pstate driver by default for 14.10 which is an
improved frequency scaling driver. On some hardware we've had evidence
of this pushing the CPU a little harder and some machines were running
hot, so we've also included thermald to stop thermal overruns.

does not support the necessary thermal controls, so on these systems
it's more like a no-op.

in ubuntu-system-settings-online-accounts: the current code just quits
the session when the session state changes to
