I had the same issue when I tried to install Kubuntu 14.10 over the old
14.04 installation. The workaround I found ist quite simple. I chose not
the default file system (ext4) but btrfs for the root partition and
the installation succeeded without any further issues. I guess, the

releases. I can download 13.10 and 13.04, boot them from USB and try to
suspend. Is this helpful?

To solve this error when upgrading 14.04-14.10 I ran:
$ dpkg -D40 -i ~/Downloads/fontconfig_2.11.0-0ubuntu4.1_amd64.deb
Then I notice this file caused the error, so I seek the packge owning it:
$ dpkg -S /usr/share/fonts/truetype/unfonts-core/UnBatangBold.ttf

back and turned it off and the signal was gone. I had to use my hack
/usr/bin/xrandr -s 1
/usr/bin/xrandr -s 0
to get the signal back.

I have installed lightdm-gtk-greeter. This worked fine for a while. When
I tried to shift to unity-greeter (which I could not) and so reverting
back to gtk-greeter it presents the login screen, where I enter password
and enter: the screen is blank for 2-3 seconds and it loads
