I only use Unity, and as i mentioned this only occurs sporadically, very
rarely, and with no way to reproduce at will that i know of. (I did see it
again not long ago, btw)

It works as a nfs fileserver with iscsiattached xfs and ext4
I can confirm that this bug is fixed in Ubuntu 14.04 with the follwing kernel

Power dialog
I don't have an AMD CPU. But I do have a bit of an odd-ball CPU from
VIA. Not sure if that even was the affected machine, though.
$ grep -E name|flags /proc/cpuinfo
model name : VIA Samuel
flags : fpu de tsc msr mce cx8 mtrr pge mmx 3dnow up
I was unable to reproduce this today
This was fixed some time ago. Installing grub to a btrfs partition
works fine in 14.04.
