Since filing this bug report I've switched to Saucy and added more RAM.
I don't know which of these two factors fixed the problem but I cannot
reproduce it anymore so as far as I am concerned the report can be
closed.

Please look into this common, basic feature.
Gnome have dismissed this issue. I find this outrageous. How are you
supposed to locate a file changed on a specific date, e.g. a photo?

David, unfortunately I don't see any updates in this area in upstream
erlang.
At this point I can suggest you using either:
1) the version from my ppa [1] or
2) the workaround from comment #6
I will update this bug as soon as the fix will be merged to the upstream
erlang.

This actually doesn't affect precise's postgresql-common itself. Newer
(i. e. backported) postgresql-X.Y versions also require a backported
postgresql-common, so instead this fix needs to land in vivid,
apt.postgresql.org, and whichever other backport sources people use.
