[Bug 1539719] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

--- Comment From brueck...@de.ibm.com 2016-02-02 03:06 EDT---
HI,

(In reply to comment #6)

the list is long and I already opened few debian bugs to include several
utilities. Also I asked whether to provide subpackages, for example,
for ziomon. It is an FCP performance monitor for s390 and depends on
further utilities which mignt not be required in every installation.

When keyboard connected and Caps Lock was pressed, but if i turn off the
keyboard strace shows fall of POLLIN/POLLOUT events in infinite cycle...

debugfs shows events with lag from 3 to 20 sec:

Keyboard.00e6 = 0
Keyboard.00e7 = 0
Keyboard.0017 = 0

but wireshark continue recieving characters without any lag from
bluetooth (bnep0) after issue occur, so i suggest that problem not in
btintel/btusb kernel modules subsystem, but in hid-core probably.

[Bug 1520519] Re: ASUS ROG GL552 TouchPad not detected

2016-02-02 Thread sameer
Have already tried the 4.4 version of ubuntu, and while it works for
sometimes it did develop freezing issues for few system commands . No
issues with graphics though.

For what its worth, I have been using my laptop on "fedora23 + dnf update to
update the kernel to 4.3 " for more than a week now without any issues
whatsoever.
Touchpad and hotkeys are all working fine, along with nvidia cuda ( removed
nouveau )

[Bug 1540803] [NEW] systemd doesn't respect /etc/fstab for internal mounts

2016-02-02 Thread Stéphane Graber
Public bug reported:

Under upstart, I can have the following line in my /etc/fstab:
tmpfs /run tmpfs defaults,size=10M 0 0

At mount time, mountall will use /etc/fstab as an override for the
internal fstab (/lib/init/fstab) and so I end up with /run mounted with
a 10MB limit.

Under systemd, the exact same fstab appears to be ignored and I end up
with a /run that has a limit of half my memory.

This may very well surprise users upgrading production environments from
14.04 to 16.04 or users that have to follow some strict partitioning and
mount configuration policies (we've seen a couple of those by now) so
it'd be good to have this resolved.

I did testing with /run in LXD containers on 14.04 (upstart) and 16.04
(systemd).

[Bug 1536555] Re: USB3 devices are not active early in boot

2016-02-02 Thread Michael Doube
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS (up-to-date packages)
  Release:  14.04

  USB3-plugged devices do not function early in the boot process. This
  includes USB2 devices plugged into USB3 ports, but does not include USBx
  devices plugged into USB2 ports (these work fine).

  To reproduce:
  1. plug keyboard into USB3 port, computer off
  2. boot
  3. attempt to select options in the GRUB menu

  Observed outcome:
  Selection of boot options is not possible

  Expected outcome:
  Selection of boot options is possible

  Also, a few people have noticed that they can't boot from media plugged
  into their USB3 ports, for example a flash drive with a Live CD image on
  it. (e.g. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1628665)

  I guess this has something to do with whether the usb3 drivers are
  available at this early stage of boot: later on, after the full kernel
  is loaded, USB3 works fine.

- I know I could plug my keyboard into a USB2 port as it was before, but I
- have these new monitors that have got only USB3 ports on them, and it's
- physically more convenient to plug keyboard & mouse into them than the
- workstation itself (Dell T7600), which is a bit far for the cables to
- reach.

[Bug 1540805] [NEW] Can't call method "description" on an undefined value at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Question.pm line 93

2016-02-02 Thread Quirin Lohr
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04
debconf version 1.5.51ubuntu2 and 1.5.58ubuntu1

I have a central LDAP based debconf configdb with default answers set
up. If there is an answer for a not installed package, debconf-get-
selections stops with error.

Expected behavior: ignore configdb entry if no templatedb entry present.

Bug can be worked around with a simple if statement. in
/usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Question.pm line 93.
Return value if no templatedb defined missing, what should be returned?

Original:

sub description {
my $this=shift;
return $this->_expand_vars($this->template->description);
}

Workaraound:

sub description {
my $this=shift;
if ( defined $this->template ) {
return $this->_expand_vars($this->template->description);
}
}

[Bug 1540807] [NEW] ArpON ver. 2.7: the DARPI and -d (--darpi) flag bug.

2016-02-02 Thread daniel CURTIS
Public bug reported:

Hello. Because on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS an ArpON package is pretty outdated
(ver. 2.0-2.1 0) I've decided to use a version from a Vivid release -
2.7.

It seems that ArpON ver. 2.7 has a bug related to a DARPI anti Arp
Poisoning techniques. Because I am using a DHCP method to obtain an IP
address I needed to use a DARPI method (Dynamin Arp Inspect.) instead of
SARPI (Static Arp Inspect). After installation via 'apt-get' utility,
configuring "arpon" file from '/etc/default/' directory and uncomment
line responsible for a DARPI method, ArpON failed to start with a
following error:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/arpon start
* Starting anti ARP poisoning daemon arpon
20:38:55 PID =

/usr/bin/arpon: invalid  option -- 'd'  [fail]

For a DARPI method a line in the '/etc/default/arpon' file looks this
way: DAEMON_OPTS="-q -f /var/log/arpon/arpon.log -g -d". According to
the Ubuntu manpage[1] '-g' flag stands for "Works in logging mode",
since '-d' flag means "Manages Arp Cache dynamically". Everything should
work okay, but it does not. I've tried many possibilities,
configurations etc.

And it seems, that a new ArpON 2.7 version requires a '-D' flag instead
'-d'. So, now there must be the '-D' flag not '-d'. After this small
change everything started to work okay:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/arpon start
* Starting anti ARP poisoning daemon arpon
20:43:32 PID =[OK]

One more test, to be one hundred percent sure: after running
'/etc/init.d/arpon status' command, status of anti ARP poisoning daemon
arpon is [OK]. Here are some technical details:

* Ubuntu 3.2.0-98.138-generic-pae 3.2.75 ('cat /proc/version_signature' command
result)
* lsb_release -rd
   Description: Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS
   Release: 12.04
* arpon: 2.7.2-1

By the way: ArpON sometimes crashed with "SIGSEGV in pthread_kill()"
(after user login), but I will have to create a new bug report.

Best regards.

[Bug 1540811] [NEW] [GDK] patch - avoid integer overflow when allocating a large block of memory

2016-02-02 Thread Monsta
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

Due to a logic error, an attempt to allocate a large block of memory
fails in gdk_cairo_set_source_pixbuf, leading to a crash of the app that
called it, for example, eom [1].

This issue had been fixed [2] in GTK+3, but GTK+2 apps that use the
mentioned function still crash when trying to allocate a lot of memory.
An example of such app is eom (Eye of MATE), an image viewer, which
crashes when trying to load a large image.

I propose fixing it in current Ubuntu releases with the patch which fixes the
crash.
The debdiffs are in the attachments in the comments below.

[Test Case]

Steps to reproduce:

1. Have a 64-bit installation of Ubuntu.
2. Install eom if it isn't installed.
3. Download the archive from the attachment of this post and unpack it.
(Firefox doesn't allow me to upload image as is - tries to make thumbnail of it
right in the file open dialog, then crashes.)
4. Open the unpacked image (27000_27000_1437947845.png) in eom.
5. eom crashes. The full backtrace is at [3].

You'll also see an error message: "failed to allocate
18446744072330584320 bytes". This huge number appears due to overflow
during multiplication of two 32-bit signed integers. In the patch, this
error is avoided by using a different memory allocation function.

[Regression Potential]

After several months of testing the patch in Debian Jessie, Debian
Testing and Ubuntu 14.04, I haven't noticed any regressions.

[Bug 1540702] Re: Resizing Scopes the window contents jitter about erratically

2016-02-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Nothing else in the real world resizes as poorly as the dash does. I'm
not sure what you're talking about.

Moving icons by whole rows to fit new rows is fine. Moving them by
single pixels during resizing is what's happening though. And that's
obviously a bug.

[Bug 1500751] Re: Cryptsetup Keyboard not working on Xubuntu 3.19.0-30

2016-02-02 Thread masand
After searching and trying for a long, long time, I finally found a
solution which is acceptable for me. The situation is rather complex, so I
try to describe it as structured as possible.

Configuration
-
Hardware configuration:
DH87RL board
i7-4771 CPU
GeForce GTX 970

Software configuartion:
Ubuntu 15.10

Driver selection

You can either go with the open nouveau driver which is installed by
default, or use the proprieatary nvidia driver. Next, the "plymouth" package
which enables you to configure the graphical boot up, is strongly involved.
Using the nvidia driver together with plymouth does not work for me, but for
all other 3 possible combinations, the solution is described below.

There are 2 issues here closely connected, one is being able to enter the
password for encrypted hard disks during boot, and the other is being able
to switch to the console when X is up and running. Both issues are described
below.

Being able to enter the password for encrypted hard disks during boot
-
Nouveau driver with plymouth:
The Nouveau driver works "ok" - this means I have to press the down arrow on the
keyboard while booting so the text mode appears. There, the password is
asked. (Some stars may already be displayed - delete them before entering the
password...)

This solution was ok, but I needed the nvidia driver to work, because with
nouveau, for example, I had no proper 3D acceleration inside virtualbox.

Nvidia driver without plymouth:
The nvidia driver I use is nvidia-352 currently. I installed it via apt-get.
So I did not download and install the driver from the nvidia.com site
directly, but used the distribution (in my case: Ubuntu 15.10) package for
the nvidia driver instead.

For the nvidia driver to work, I had to disable plymouth. This can be done
for example by passing the "noplymouth" option to the kernel parameters.

--- /etc/default/grub (example) ---
[...]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash noplymouth"
[...]

--- update-grub ---
Afterwards, execute update-grub from the command line:
# update-grub

With that changes, I can see the screen flicker shortly during the graphical
boot (obviously the password prompt appearing for a fraction of a second,
and then disappearing again). But now I know that the password
prompt is there, and I can start to type the password. The prompt will
reappear with the first character typed, having recognized the typed
character already.
If insecure whether the password prompt is ready or not, I can still press
the down arrow as described above.

Yes, that´s not a perfect solution - but after searching and trying for such
a long, long time: At least it is working - and you can get used to it.

Just out of curiosity, I also tried the nouveau driver with plymouth disabled:
In that case it works much smoother, as the password prompt really appears
and stays on the screen.

So it seems the free nouveau driver is doing something better than the
nvidia driver. I guess NVIDIA has some homework to do here!

Swith to console

With the nouveau driver, it is easily possible to switch to the console
(CTRL-ALT-F1)

With the nvidia-352 driver, switching to the console is NOT possible!
Pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 just does nothing.
A (n ugly) workaround I found for this is to restart the window manager from
within your X session. Working for me with lightdm as windows manager, not
tested for others. Please save all your open documents BEFORE doing this, as
all applications of your X session will be killed:
sudo service lightdm restart

So again, the nouveau driver does this better than the official nvidia
driver. I need to say that I´m really disappointed by NVIDIA about that!

[Bug 1539634] Re: network-manager crashes when using libnl-3-200-3.21.1-1ubuntu1

2016-02-02 Thread Ryan Harper
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+  * NetworkManager depends on libnl (libnl-3-200 libnl-genl-3-200
+libnl-route-3-200) and when libnl is updated to proposed
+3.2.21-1ubuntu1 NM segfaults due to libnl exposing a bug in NM
+validation packets.
+
+This affects the 0.98 release of NetworkManager and has already
+been fixed in newer releases.
+
+ * Backporting fixes from upstream release is required to prevent
+NetworkManager from faulting which breaks networking on most
+Desktop releases.
+
+ * All patches applied are already accepted upstream and newer Ubuntu
+releases are not affected.
+
+ * Upgrading NetworkManager to 0.9.8.8-0ubuntu7.3 prior to updating
+libnl-3.2.21-1ubuntu1 is required to prevent NetworkManager crashing.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+  * Reproduce crash test:
+ 1. Download 14.04.03 Desktop iso, amd64

+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * NetworkManager is a highly visible package, so testing NetworkManager
+functionality is critical. The patch does address the crash specificly
+introduced by the updated libnl SRU.
+
+ * We need to ensure that users have installed this NetworkManager
+update before installing libnl3 update (special phasing needed).
+
+ [Original Description]
  Testing out proposed libnl-3 package[1] exposed a bug in NM 0.98.

  After installing updated libnl3 and restarting networkmanager, NM
  crashes with:

  /var/log/syslog shows:
  init: network-manager main process (1057) killed by SEGV signal
  init: network-manager main process ended, respawning
  init: network-manager main process (1065) killed by SEGV signal
  init: network-manager respawning too fast, stopped

  The bug has been fixed in upstream 0.98 with these patches:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/commit/?id=8e4576b9fdb5c888d20a13aa2cc198df790dba54

[Bug 1413818] Re: Notification sounds aren't being played back on E4.5 (ubuntu-push restricts directories and block custom sounds)

2016-02-02 Thread Guillaume F
I don't know if I'm encountering the same bug but comment #49 seems to
say so… I have two 4.5 phones, and I think I've always had a
notification sound for Gmail, even though there's no way to choose which
sound is played. However, since OTA-9 one of my phone only plays the
notification sound very quietly as described by roa. The other continues
to work fine. I've checked different sound levels (main, multimedia,
alarm) but they all appear to be good.

[Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-02-02 Thread Xtien
I have been working with no problems since Jan. 20. Today an Ubuntu
update wanted me to reboot, then after reboot the computer froze when I
started Android Studio. Rebooted again, same, and again. What seems to
help is when I type

IBUS_ENABLE_SYNC_MODE=1 ibus-daemon -xrd
(from here: http://tools.android.com/knownissues/ibus)

I'm not sure if this actually works, but now I disabled ibus and I have
no freeze. The issue they report is different from what I see. For now,
I'll just never reboot my computer. I hope someone is working on the
bug. If there's anything I can do, let me know.

[Bug 1540803] Re: systemd doesn't respect /etc/fstab for internal mounts

2016-02-02 Thread Martin Pitt
Some context: This was motivated on real hardware, not containers. For
"full" installations like VMs or real-iron the initrd already mounts
/run, and if it is already mounted then systemd won't touch it. As there
is no initrd in containers,
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/master/src/core/mount-setup.c
will kick in and mount early stuff like /run, /proc/, etc. We can't
influence mounts from mount-setup.c with fstab as this happens (and
needs to happen) before /etc/fstab even gets parsed. But we could either
make initramfs-tools look at fstab and mount /run differently
(preferred), or remount /run etc. later in the game (that sounds racy,
inelegant, and might fail if you have options which can't be applied on
remount; I don't like that very much).

I have the same problem on Ubuntu 14.04.2 and I had to uninstall deja-

I think this bug should be marked as critical since it "Renders the
system temporarily or permanently unusable": if you don't manage to kill
the process quickly after you notice the problem the entire OS grinds to
a halt.

[Bug 1539513] Re: networkmanager segfaults with 3.2.21-1ubuntu1

2016-02-02 Thread GOLDERWEB
As mentioned in updated description this should only affect users who
have activated trusty-proposed.

Non-techs normaly won't have it active. Otherwise it can be simply
deactivated by unchecking the related box on "Software & Updates"
settings. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=Software_Sources.png.
There remove the hook before Pre-released updates (trusty-proposed).

This should only be active if you know what you are doing and never on
productive systems. See documentation on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed.

[Bug 1539009] Re: Mouse cursor is unusably slow in Unity 8 with a 1000Hz mouse

Ah. It seems InputConsumer does not care about EVENT_AXIS_RX and
EVENT_AXIS_RY at all - but it should accumulate it. So it only resamples
the absolute coodinates. That could be a good reason to rewrite the
InputConsume to a more readable code..

In my case the partition name is a zero length string but if I change it
then the output is correct.

This patch resolves the issue for me.

[Bug 1523637] Re: grub-installer fails due to alternate disk partition error - 14.04.3

2016-02-02 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From mauri...@br.ibm.com 2016-02-02 05:14 EDT---
The discussion details from the other bug:
---

Theoretically, PowerNV doesn't need a PReP partition
(because the Petitboot bootloader directly searchs for, and reads, grub.cfg
files)

However, the partman-prep udeb packages ships the prep_sync_flag script,
which scans for all PReP partitions and sets (syncs) up their PReP flag.

I believe that script shold help with this problem, as it seems the lack
of the PReP flag being set causes grub-installer to pick up an incorrect device.

A did a test to see if freeze would work. And it does work better than
suspend. Only snag is that it only works with a keyboard connected as
the keyboard is the only way to wake it up. The power button is still

[Bug 1523637] Patch for libdebian-installer to detect PowerNV as powerpc/chrp_ibm

2016-02-02 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment on attachment From mauri...@br.ibm.com 2016-02-02 05:11

Hi @mathieu-tl

This patch has been verified to resolve this problem (thanks Kevin), and
another one which is being mirrored.

The problem is partman-prep is currently not downloaded on PowerNV, but
we need prep_sync_flag to set the PReP flag on the correct partition,
which lines it up for grub-installer.
