[Bug 1540803] [NEW] systemd doesn't respect /etc/fstab for internal mounts
Public bug reported: Under upstart, I can have the following line in my /etc/fstab: tmpfs /run tmpfs defaults,size=10M 0 0 At mount time, mountall will use /etc/fstab as an override for the internal fstab (/lib/init/fstab) and so I end up with /run mounted with a 10MB limit. Under systemd, the exact same fstab appears to be ignored and I end up with a /run that has a limit of half my memory. This may very well surprise users upgrading production environments from 14.04 to 16.04 or users that have to follow some strict partitioning and mount configuration policies (we've seen a couple of those by now) so it'd be good to have this resolved. I did testing with /run in LXD containers on 14.04 (upstart) and 16.04 (systemd). ** Affects: systemd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1540803 Title: systemd doesn't respect /etc/fstab for internal mounts To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1540803/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1536555] Re: USB3 devices are not active early in boot
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS (up-to-date packages) Release: 14.04 USB3-plugged devices do not function early in the boot process. This includes USB2 devices plugged into USB3 ports, but does not include USBx devices plugged into USB2 ports (these work fine). To reproduce: 1. plug keyboard into USB3 port, computer off 2. boot 3. attempt to select options in the GRUB menu Observed outcome: Selection of boot options is not possible Expected outcome: Selection of boot options is possible Also, a few people have noticed that they can't boot from media plugged into their USB3 ports, for example a flash drive with a Live CD image on it. (e.g. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1628665) I guess this has something to do with whether the usb3 drivers are available at this early stage of boot: later on, after the full kernel is loaded, USB3 works fine. - I know I could plug my keyboard into a USB2 port as it was before, but I - have these new monitors that have got only USB3 ports on them, and it's - physically more convenient to plug keyboard & mouse into them than the - workstation itself (Dell T7600), which is a bit far for the cables to - reach. + I know I could plug my keyboard into a USB2 port as it was before, but I have these new monitors that have got only USB3 ports on them, and it's physically more convenient to plug keyboard & mouse into them than the workstation itself (Dell T7600), which is a bit far for the cables to reach. + --- + ApportVersion: 2.14.1-0ubuntu3.19 + Architecture: amd64 + AudioDevicesInUse: + USERPID ACCESS COMMAND + /dev/snd/controlC2: mdoube 2897 F pulseaudio + /dev/snd/controlC1: mdoube 2897 F pulseaudio + /dev/snd/controlC0: mdoube 2897 F pulseaudio + CurrentDesktop: Unity + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04 + HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=8629e880-0342-46f8-9392-7b5444e0ef96 + InstallationDate: Installed on 2015-10-12 (112 days ago) + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS "Trusty Tahr" - Beta amd64+mac (20150805) + MachineType: Dell Inc. [Bug 1540807] [NEW] ArpON ver. 2.7: the DARPI and -d (--darpi) flag bug.
Public bug reported: Hello. Because on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS an ArpON package is pretty outdated (ver. 2.0-2.1 0) I've decided to use a version from a Vivid release - 2.7. It seems that ArpON ver. 2.7 has a bug related to a DARPI anti Arp Poisoning techniques. Because I am using a DHCP method to obtain an IP address I needed to use a DARPI method (Dynamin Arp Inspect.) instead of SARPI (Static Arp Inspect). After installation via 'apt-get' utility, configuring "arpon" file from '/etc/default/' directory and uncomment line responsible for a DARPI method, ArpON failed to start with a following error: $ sudo /etc/init.d/arpon start * Starting anti ARP poisoning daemon arpon 20:38:55 PID = /usr/bin/arpon: invalid option -- 'd' [fail] For a DARPI method a line in the '/etc/default/arpon' file looks this way: DAEMON_OPTS="-q -f /var/log/arpon/arpon.log -g -d". According to the Ubuntu manpage[1] '-g' flag stands for "Works in logging mode", since '-d' flag means "Manages Arp Cache dynamically". Everything should work okay, but it does not. I've tried many possibilities, configurations etc. And it seems, that a new ArpON 2.7 version requires a '-D' flag instead '-d'. So, now there must be the '-D' flag not '-d'. After this small change everything started to work okay: $ sudo /etc/init.d/arpon start * Starting anti ARP poisoning daemon arpon 20:43:32 PID =[OK] One more test, to be one hundred percent sure: after running '/etc/init.d/arpon status' command, status of anti ARP poisoning daemon arpon is [OK]. [Bug 1540811] [NEW] [GDK] patch - avoid integer overflow when allocating a large block of memory
Public bug reported: [Impact] Due to a logic error, an attempt to allocate a large block of memory fails in gdk_cairo_set_source_pixbuf, leading to a crash of the app that called it, for example, eom [1]. This issue had been fixed [2] in GTK+3, but GTK+2 apps that use the mentioned function still crash when trying to allocate a lot of memory. An example of such app is eom (Eye of MATE), an image viewer, which crashes when trying to load a large image. I propose fixing it in current Ubuntu releases with the patch which fixes the crash. The debdiffs are in the attachments in the comments below. [Test Case] Steps to reproduce: 1. Have a 64-bit installation of Ubuntu. 2. Install eom if it isn't installed. 3. Download the archive from the attachment of this post and unpack it. (Firefox doesn't allow me to upload image as is - tries to make thumbnail of it right in the file open dialog, then crashes.) 4. Open the unpacked image (27000_27000_1437947845.png) in eom. 5. eom crashes. The full backtrace is at [3]. You'll also see an error message: "failed to allocate 18446744072330584320 bytes". This huge number appears due to overflow during multiplication of two 32-bit signed integers. In the patch, this error is avoided by using a different memory allocation function. [Regression Potential] After several months of testing the patch in Debian Jessie, Debian Testing and Ubuntu 14.04, I haven't noticed any regressions. [Bug 1500751] Re: Cryptsetup Keyboard not working on Xubuntu 3.19.0-30
After searching and trying for a long, long time, I finally found a solution which is acceptable for me. The situation is rather complex, so I try to describe it as structured as possible. Configuration - Hardware configuration: DH87RL board i7-4771 CPU GeForce GTX 970 Software configuartion: Ubuntu 15.10 Driver selection You can either go with the open nouveau driver which is installed by default, or use the proprieatary nvidia driver. Next, the "plymouth" package which enables you to configure the graphical boot up, is strongly involved. Using the nvidia driver together with plymouth does not work for me, but for all other 3 possible combinations, the solution is described below. There are 2 issues here closely connected, one is being able to enter the password for encrypted hard disks during boot, and the other is being able to switch to the console when X is up and running. Both issues are described below. Being able to enter the password for encrypted hard disks during boot - Nouveau driver with plymouth: The Nouveau driver works "ok" - this means I have to press the down arrow on the keyboard while booting so the text mode appears. There, the password is asked. (Some stars may already be displayed - delete them before entering the password...) This solution was ok, but I needed the nvidia driver to work, because with nouveau, for example, I had no proper 3D acceleration inside virtualbox. Nvidia driver without plymouth: The nvidia driver I use is nvidia-352 currently. I installed it via apt-get. So I did not download and install the driver from the nvidia.com site directly, but used the distribution (in my case: Ubuntu 15.10) package for the nvidia driver instead. For the nvidia driver to work, I had to disable plymouth. This can be done for example by passing the "noplymouth" option to the kernel parameters. --- /etc/default/grub (example) --- [...] GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash noplymouth" [...] --- update-grub --- Afterwards, execute update-grub from the command line: # update-grub With that changes, I can see the screen flicker shortly during the graphical boot (obviously the password prompt appearing for a fraction of a second, and then disappearing again). But now I know that the password prompt is there, and I can start to type the password. The prompt will reappear with the first character typed, having recognized the typed character already. If insecure whether the password prompt is ready or not, I can still press the down arrow as described above. Yes, that´s not a perfect solution - but after searching and trying for such a long, long time: At least it is working - and you can get used to it. Just out of curiosity, I also tried the nouveau driver with plymouth disabled: In that case it works much smoother, as the password prompt really appears and stays on the screen. So it seems the free nouveau driver is doing something better than the nvidia driver. I guess NVIDIA has some homework to do here! Swith to console With the nouveau driver, it is easily possible to switch to the console (CTRL-ALT-F1) With the nvidia-352 driver, switching to the console is NOT possible! Pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 just does nothing. A (n ugly) workaround I found for this is to restart the window manager from within your X session. Working for me with lightdm as windows manager, not tested for others. Please save all your open documents BEFORE doing this, as all applications of your X session will be killed: sudo service lightdm restart So again, the nouveau driver does this better than the official nvidia driver. I need to say that I´m really disappointed by NVIDIA about that! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1500751 Title: Cryptsetup Keyboard not working on Xubuntu 3.19.0-30 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cryptsetup/+bug/1500751/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Switch to console With the nouveau driver, it is easily possible to switch to the console (CTRL-ALT-F1) With the nvidia-352 driver, switching to the console is NOT possible! [Bug 1386005] Re: Password not accepted graphical boot for encrypted root system
After searching and trying for a long, long time, I finally found a solution which is acceptable for me. The situation is rather complex, so I try to describe it as structured as possible. Configuration - Hardware configuration: DH87RL board i7-4771 CPU GeForce GTX 970 Software configuration: Ubuntu 15.10 Driver selection You can either go with the open nouveau driver which is installed by default, or use the proprietary nvidia driver. [Bug 1540803] Re: systemd doesn't respect /etc/fstab for internal mounts
Some context: This was motivated on real hardware, not containers. For "full" installations like VMs or real-iron the initrd already mounts /run, and if it is already mounted then systemd won't touch it. As there is no initrd in containers, https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/master/src/core/mount-setup.c will kick in and mount early stuff like /run, /proc/, etc. We can't influence mounts from mount-setup.c with fstab as this happens (and needs to happen) before /etc/fstab even gets parsed. But we could either make initramfs-tools look at fstab and mount /run differently (preferred), or remount /run etc. later in the game (that sounds racy, inelegant, and might fail if you have options which can't be applied on remount; I don't like that very much). ** Changed in: systemd (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1540803 Title: systemd doesn't respect /etc/fstab for internal mounts To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1540803/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1523637] Re: grub-installer fails due to alternate disk partition error - 14.04.3
--- Comment From mauri...@br.ibm.com 2016-02-02 05:14 EDT--- The discussion details from the other bug: --- Theoretically, PowerNV doesn't need a PReP partition (because the Petitboot bootloader directly searchs for, and reads, grub.cfg files) However, the partman-prep udeb packages ships the prep_sync_flag script, which scans for all PReP partitions and sets (syncs) up their PReP flag. I believe that script shold help with this problem, as it seems the lack of the PReP flag being set causes grub-installer to pick up an incorrect device. ** Tags removed: severity-high targetmilestone-inin--- ** Tags added: severity-critical targetmilestone-inin14044 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1523637 Title: grub-installer fails due to alternate disk partition error - 14.04.3 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/1523637/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
