For the record, this "auto-destruct" behaviour with the xenial kernel
happens just by itself: reboot the instance, let it sit there for 15 or
60 minutes, then this kernel spew starts happening and it gets locked
up with losing network/ssh access. There was no actual payload on
these.

was hard coded to return 1 (has hw flash) which is apparently needed to be

systemd's brain (e. g. from a manual mount or fstab) and then adding the
unit to /etc would cause that. But indeed I cannot reproduce this

+ Policycoreutils is being installed by default because the package is
FTR, system did boot to working network interfaces with the above
configuration (including pre-up/sleep lines). I'm not sure if there
were warnings issued as the default Ubuntu last action on boot is to
clear all boot messages in favour of displaying the login prompt at the
top of the screen :-(
