I suppose that cups.path is only for booting, i. e. you want to start
cups.service on boot, not again on demand on a running system. Does it ever
happen that cups.service terminates by itself due to inactivity? If not, this
provides a good enough workaround for not stopping cups.path properly in the
maintainer scripts. If yes, this appproach doesn't work.

Note that you probably want to do the same for cups.socket, with the same
reasoning as above.

[Bug 550856] Re: page size setting is broken, use it as default crop or fix it by other means

2016-12-21 Thread Sylvain Viart
I got it in xubuntu 16.04.1 fresh install with Brother DCP-J715W
simple-scan version 3.20.0

I want A4 page size, and simple-scan is displaying a bigger page size.

Setting in preferences doesn't change the page. (quit + restart)

starting up simple-scan from shell in debug mode (-d)
Gives me a path ~/.cache/simple-scan/state

I remove this file and restarted simple-scan and page size seems now OK.

cat ~/.cache/simple-scan/state
[window]
width=600
height=400
is-maximized=false
is-fullscreen=false

[last-page]
width=2480
height=3506
dpi=300
scan-direction=top-to-bottom

May it helps…

[Bug 1651580] Re: UnityTestCase.mouseFlick is incredibly slow now

2016-12-21 Thread Albert Astals Cid
On my machine

We're calling
 mouseFlick(fakeWindow, 161, 161, 41, 41, true/*pressMouse*/,
true/*releaseMouse*/, 4/*speed*/, 20/*iterations*/);

and the documentation says
// speed is in pixels/second

We have to travel a distance of sqrt((161-41)*(161-41) +
(161-41)*(161-41)) = 120 pixels

Since we told it we want to travel at 4 pixels per second, the total
time has to be 30 seconds, since we told it we wan 20 iterations, it'll
wait 1.5 seconds between mouse moves.

So previously was broken and now does what it was told to do.

I don't see the bug (other than the mouseFlick call being wrong at
passing such a slow speed if you want)

[Bug 1651617] Re: [regression] Unity8 no longer visible (just a black screen) on zesty, although the process is running

2016-12-21 Thread Michał Sawicz
That's because miral 1.0 was released in the mean time, with SONAME 2,
so it's libmiral2 now.

Apart from that, old qtmir is used (instead of the fake one in unity8
-fake-env that gets installed).

Third issue is that miral needs to get MIR'd (bug #1651384).

[Bug 1187282] Re: update-manager using 100% CPU and lots of memory

2016-12-21 Thread Ville Ranki
Still happening on Ubuntu 16.04. After boot starting any apps is really
slow and the reason seems to be update-manager hogging all CPU time.
After a few minutes it stops and the system runs normally.

2016-12-21 Thread s.illes79
yakkety comes with /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/51-synaptics-quirks.conf
which has Option JumpyCursorThreshold in it .

So I tried playing with various values but had no luck.

Also

synclient JumpyCursorThreshold=10
Returns Unknown parameter JumpyCursorThreshold

Does anyone know why this parameter is gone?

[Bug 1613027] Re: Network scanner not detected by xsane after kernel upgrade

2016-12-21 Thread Anthony Buckley
There have been some developments with this problem so I thought I should
post the latest news.

Firstly, I have reported the problem as directed above to the people concerned
and the netdev team twice, but there has been no response.

Secondly, I managed to narrow down the cause of the problem in the codeline
only to then discover that its a known issue. A suggested patch to fix
the problem was rejected with the expectation that applications would
have to be changed to handle the new kernel network code.

Further details may be viewed here:-
https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/618164/

 No doubt the sentiments expressed in the post are valid, but they
seem rather inflexible and harsh to me given that the failing applications were
working. Ultimately if an application is not changed, users will be stuck. In
my case its no network scanner. Seems crazy to me when a simple change will
resolve the problem.

The application in point here (bug 1613027) is the Epson network plugin.

Unfortunately Epson or the authoring 3rd party do not publish the source code
and my efforts through Epson support to try to raise the issue or trace the
origin of the network plugin have been fruitless.

So for anyone experiencing the problem here, and it looks like there is at
least
one, what to do...

1. Do nothing and only have a usb scanner.
2. Download the Linux kernel source code every time there is a new release
and apply the suggested patch yourself.
3. Override the system 'listen' function with 'dlsym' whenever the
network plugin is invoked. This is what I have done.
To this end I have created a repository on my
git home page here:- https://github.com/mr-headwind/ListenOverride
This should only be viewed as a temporary workaround, but given the
circumstances I suspect it may be permanent.

Regards.
Tony

[Bug 975973] Re: Please integrate Samba 4 with bind9 package

2016-12-21 Thread Patrick Hibbs
As this seems the best place to put it, samba version 4.3.11+dfsg-
0ubuntu0.16.04.1 adds a new file
/var/lib/samba/private/named.conf.update to bind's config when using the
BIND9_FLATFILE config.

According to the sample named.conf generated by samba's domain
provisioning command, it's an empty file that's populated at runtime by
samba for defining what domain controllers can issue a DNS record update
to bind, and what records they are permitted to update.

By default, bind's access to this file is also blocked by apparmor.

When using the BIND9_DLZ config, apparmor still blocks access to the
/var/lib/samba/private/named.conf file, in additon to the
/var/lib/samba/private/dns/sam.ldb file. Fixing apparmor allows bind and
samba to work as intended.

According to
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Setting_up_Samba_as_an_Active_Directory_Domain_Controller

the BIND9_FLATFILE config option is unsupported and will be removed in a
future release of samba, which means only BIND9_DLZ will work at that
point. The reason I bring it up, is that bug#127184 wants to put bind
into a chroot, which will currently break BIND9_DLZ as it requires
access to samba's libraries and database files. (As per:
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/BIND9_DLZ_DNS_Back_End ) As such
currently this bug would be in opposition to bug#127184 unless both
samba and bind were placed in the same chroot.

** Attachment added: "Journalctl logs for bind's apparmor access blocks"
