Solved this problem as follows. Now have a non-default theme in place
(redglass) with a larger cursor (48, not default 18).
Thanks to all above for ideas.

Unfortunately I've hit a hurdle with either an existing install or a
fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04.1 with all the updates completed...
The first two commands in the terminal worked perfectly fine

Tested today when I installed the latest upstream kernel today to test
for a touchpad bug.
No luck, Function keys still not responding.
Will make a note to install upstream kernels in a month or so to see if
it's fixed.

Some further experimentation seems to hint that the tools that aren't
working are not simply hanging. Instead, they are simply not able to
draw anything on the screen. For example, after running HelloWorld.efi,
nothing will appear. However, pressing Enter will return to the EFI
