I've experienced this problem as well on Ubuntu MATE 16.04.2 LTS, but
managed to resolve it.
This issue seems to be related somehow to the existing partition table
of the drive: even after manually creating a new GPT table in gparted

No, I've just checked: toggling full screen on Chromium does not trigger
this behavior.
For now I've only experienced this with Chrome (stable/beta).
As another user pointed out, it seems to also occur toggling full screen

If instance creation fails for any reason, then its tricky to delete
instances on a ZFS storage backend with ephemeral storage volumes; the
destroy call does not check whether the volume has actually been
created, resulting in a stacktrace and failure to delete the volume:

I find the categories in the Activities Overview's applications list
rather useful when it comes to certain groups of applications which I
use, however I have to go all the way into the list to get the grouping
which should make it much easier to access certain applications

Sorry for digging out an old thread, but it is really surprising that this
issue has not been addressed yet!
This is really a bad UI as well as UX, and the solution is as simple as merely
listing down the Files in a folder.
