So, I think the issue occurs because of the pte_lockptr lock being used
on a PMD and is incontention with the lock on the same PMD. There are
several possible points where this can happen, for example, pages being
migrated on NUMA systems (unlikely in most of these bug reports) or even
mremap()
Can you give us exact commands to reproduce it? The example in the
original post looks like you're running cargo, not rustc directly. Does
it still occur if you move ~/.cargo away somewhere else?

I'm not familiar with systemd-resolved but it seems that you are not
using it as otherwise you'd have 127.0.0.53 in /etc/resolv.conf?
If you could run a packet capture while you do DNS lookups when
connected to the VPN that would be useful. You could capture with:
sudo tcpdump -w /tmp/dns.pcap

of removing that installation. The Unity greeter looks normal on
