while I still often get the error popup on that computer I cannot
confirm that it is actually Xorg that crashed, because now that I
looked, the crash popup on 17.04 today was about some unrelated software

But since upgrade to 16.04 each access to a samba share need a authentication

After a few checks and rewrites now there also is a merge proposal for
uvtool [1]:
In general I'll assign the bug tasks of nova/uvtool to the receivers of the MPs
as "for now" I can only wait in regard to those bug tasks.
Also ubuntu-virt fix is complete, removing assignee there.

What happens if you remove the fb driver - uninstall the xserver-xorg-
video-fbdev package?
Also, I'm not sure what (if any) changes have been made in the kernel
version you're running - the 'pearl' version - but are you able to try
against a mainline kernel?
