I was lucky and was able to pawn the computer off to another family
member with Windows installed (and I got myself an i3 based Dell that
works fine). That said, I had the computer back a month ago (to clean
out the heat sink and remove a virus - natch) and looked into it with an
external USB

Just a side note folks but there's two SMBv1's involved here and both
are mentioned in this bug report.
There's the server part ( server min protocol ).
But there is also a samba client part ( client min / max protocol ) and
that's where the fun starts.

I upgraded from kernel 4.4 to 4.8 on 16.04 LTS in the hope the issue
would go away. My hang is in btrfs-cleaner, not sure if this is the same
bug or not.

This happened to me after I loaded a 10GB Mongo database, which took up
50% of my 16GB of memory. Even after I freed up all memory by stopping
the Mongo server, Nautilus is now broken.
