I'm not sure that the greeter for a graphical user session would be the
proper place for changing the default keyboard configuration. A GUI
option for the purpose might fit in some equivalent to unity-tweak-tool
or gnome-tweak-tool.

resolutions that the tv originally reported, the audio over hdmi begins to work

When unity-gtk-module is loaded dragging icons on the MATE desktop or
Caja file manager results in the icons not having a transparent
background. An animated gif is attached to demonstrate the issue.
This issue appears to have manifested since this upstream GTK commit
landed.

On the newer machine, the P50, I reinstalled 17.10 ubuntu yesterday,
with pre-release packages enabled. It is using gdm3. It works, even with
nvidia modeset=1 and external monitors. It is not obvious to me which
updated packages have fixed this, since I also tried pre-release on the
broken install.
