I have the same problem on ubuntu 17.10 with gnome shell 3.26.0
Bug usually occurs while tabbing between active windows. The effect is
the screen freezing for some time and when it comes back gnome-shell
restarting (looks same as restarting it with "ALT+F2, r").
I do not have actual reproduction
The bug didn't happened on test kernel 4.1.0-1.
Test step:
1. PXE install Ubuntu 16.04.3.
2. Downgrade kernel to 4.1.0-1.
3. The screen goes normally after a reboot.

The solution sugested by connstance does not resolve the problem. In my
case I am trying to access my customer VPN and I cannot password protect
the certificate. In pfSense this is a global option, and if they change

This bug is also reproducible with the end user stage of an OEM
installation which runs ubiquity-dm like a boot from an ISO.
I think 4.14 (from Canonical kernel team's ppa) fixes the issue. I
installed this kernel during the OEM prepare stage, then the image boots
fine during the end user setup.
I am on 17.04 - I've just installed the proposed kernel (4.10.36) and
verified that it does indeed solve my problem. My keyboard works through
multiple reboots and "re-pluggings" as described above.

Thanks for your suggestions. I tried them all for 4.10.0-35-generic and
4.14.0-rc2 without any change to the issues. I noticed that the shutdown
(until the power LED turns off) is very quick (1 to 2 seconds). The
delay between shutdown and the unwanted reboot is about 3 seconds.
